That is the way "At Will" employment is suppose to work; employers don't have to give notice before terminating employees either.
However, attorneys and things like DAC have complicated some things in some cases; ie. terminated employees suing for wrongful termination, federal legislation requiring training of employees that were terminated without notice, and managers trying to cover their butts or saving their bonuses.
It usually is not this complicated; it really isn't. In the case of driver managers that earn driver retention bonuses, it is.

I'm not a huge quote guy but sometimes ya got to go to a bigger mental power.

Well if any company in my opinion has a worry about an ex-employee wanting to sue the company for any wrong doing, shouldn't that company have a "file" or "record" of that employee? 99% of the time employees don't really care about sueing, they just want to move on, but then you have a guy who knows a guy who has an uncle that's a lawyer....i've made employee of the month twice in my lifetime so far....you know what i did with my certificates and trophies? I hung them up on my wall in the living room. I would never in a million years even think about sueing that company because they told me, that for a month, i was the best.

OK yes at will states and the companies in them can do certain things like terminate you 2000 miles from home!
Yes we all know that XYZ company can terminate you as soon as you say the word quit.
That's why you NEVER say a single thing to them until you get HOME to unload all the junk in the truck and keep just enough clothing to last 2 weeks. If it does NOT fit in the 1 bag that you will put in the cargo bay and your carry on bag you do not need it unless you could care less for it and leave it at the yard when you leave.
Now, many have over the course of these beaten to death I quit threads, have said that companies will refuse to sign for a small envelope with a return receipt requested but they do not turn down FedX or UPS envelopes. Use that way to prove to whoever that they got something from you!
Yes E Mail can be used BUT do NOT make it your only way to send them a letter that tells them you quit. Send the freaking paper signed by you letter!
When you are notified that the thing was delivered is when you send in on QC or PN that you are giving them a 2 week notice for such and such a date and send it, then take a picture of it and then call the HR department NOT DISPATCH! After talking to Human Resorces THEN call your dispatcher but be prepared to be told to unload the truck there or come to the yard.
It just struck me about the abandoned under load that some of these pathitic BFIs do so here is another tip. Either take a picture or a video of your last load dispatch, the load conformation and the delivery screen information then every message sent especially the one that gets you back to where the company wants the unit to be dropped. The last picture of the screen should be the one that shows the GPS location of the unit! That number should match the geo-tag in your camera which can only be a good thing! IF you drop an empty trailer take a picture of the back of the trailer IF the trailer number is back there and get the tag in the picture also. Be sure geo-tagging and the date is on and open the doors so that you can get a picture of the inside of that MT trailer so that if given a quit under load you have proof not only on your screen but the pic of an MT trailer sitting in front of a sign or building of BFI and I would actually email it to your HR department so they know that if they do something stupid like slam your DAC you'll have ammunition to sue them silly and when you go inside tell them that you to cover your reputation if an inadvertent misunderstanding of a bad DAC report were to happen you have picture showing the truck in clean condition of the outside and of all the equipment that was issued and a signed inspection report that the truck is in good condition and ask them if they would like copies for their files! -
Email works fine as long as you copy your Attorney on the email.
-
That definitely helps too !!!
-
Yes E-Mail does work but so does the delete key! That piece of paper on that envelope or that electronic delivered stamp from FedX or UPS works a lot better than an Email, as it could go to the spam folder and not even opened!
USE PAPER! Do NOT be cheap when it comes to a freaking stupid DAC report!
Yeah the new age of technology is here but so is the new age of deleting stuff and getting away with the "I received nothing in my E-Mail box." line. It matters not that your attorney got a copy. Different people different options in that Outlook program!
Yeah it costs a little but how much is too much when trying to stay employed? That pathetic $3.00 for the return receipt or the $12 on a UPS or FedX is money well spent over a DAC report that can take a whole month to get fixed. -
would they have given him a 2 week notice if they were going to fire him?that 2 week notice is for the birds.because correct me if im wrong, most people quit because it's not working out .this is'nt 40 years ago when everything was stable and people respected these sorts of things.employers now don't give 2 ##### about you.not to say you should'nt give a 2 week under diffrent terms.like if everything was going fine but you just was offered a better job or youwanted to go back to school or whatever.but most of the time people quit because it's become a #### job and things are not working...ie not making any money and being jerked around.
say a company was treating you like dog #### would you feel the need to still give a 2 weeks notice to a company that is ######## on you?drvrtech77 and OPUS 7 Thank this. -
In my opinion your giving the notice for your self not the company. If they don't give a 2##### about you then thats the more reason to give a notice just so this doesn't happen. just because the company's not treating you the way you wan't to be treated doesn't mean tuck your tail and run. alot of times it not just the company its the employee as well. I will stick to my guns and will always give notice when i leave ,who knows that company could get bought out by someone and become one of the best in the industry, and will not hire you back because you left without notice... i've seen it happen.snowman01 and Rollover the Original Thank this.
