I was looking at the the Thrift Nickle. Stephens Transport had an ad for a driver hiring seminar. From becomeadriver dot com, they seem to offer no-interest loans for housing and food when going through their training. They also seem to cancel the cost of the training as you work for them over the course of a year.

Does anyone have any experience with Stephens Transport company-sponsored training? Are they just trying to get you to sign contracts with the intent to force you out after the training? Or do they really want you to work for them?

no offense intended, but this sounds like normal recruiting rhetoric.

i went thru there school sept 03. they will put u up in a hotel, u have to sign a contract that you will work with them for 2 years in order for the loan to be paid for. i lasted 5 months with them then made arrangements with the loan company to pay off the 4000. if you can handle the .25cpm and the sitting around with them go for it.

Yea Stevens comes into my job 3-5times a week and most the drivers are pretty new and say Stevens suck don't get any miles and never get you home. So I'd try and stay away from them

it takes an average student grad a good year of OTR to actually know what the basics are. i didnt say a year to be a pro, i said a year to know how to turn corners and bump most any dock. it has been posted here by many drivers, the first year in this industry will either make or break you. throwing a lease in the mix only complicates matters.

there is no way on earth that a recent student grad is going to be able to eat the requirements of a lease. why do slime ball companies offer this program? more money for them when you fail. they keep your payments and the truck, then they can sue you for breach of contract, and then they are off to sucker someone else. then it repeats.

If you can't do any better than stevens,

perhaps you should reconsider your career choice.......

well..i thought i would chime in...everyone has nothing good to say about stevens, but, they have some of the nicest trucks i have seen...they are not ALL ABOUT leasing..but, im sure they probably do push it....their pay scale is nice...so, ask their recruiter a few more questions and make sure you are making an informed decision about your career :biggrin_25519:

It actually takes 30 months to pay off the loan completely. You have to commit to a year and work it or they will come after you for the whole shebang. As far as I know I am the only person to get out of paying after leaving early. Legally, I mean. I filed a BK and they didn't show up for the creditors hearing to argue that it is a school loan. So it got discharged along with all the rest.

As far as their training program, it is one of the longest, but whether it is of value really depends on the trainers you get. I had both good and bad, and if I had it to do over again I would probably have stuck it out to at least my year and found a better job.
