both engines have EGR problems. But cummins EGR sytem is twice cheapper, but cummins turbo by Holset is the expencive thing, Volvo Turbo is cheapper and better.
'07 Cummins may have DPF. It is additional money when it failsLast edited: Dec 31, 2011

Go for Volvo if you not have done that before. You can always trade it in or make a positive deal with the seller if you are smart. I think Volvo can be a joyable experience for you. VED 12 litre 450 HP is not bad depending of where you will drive. Is you married talk with your wife about it.

one more Volvo issue. Weak wiring harness, if you ride on rought roads, keep heat shrink, electric band, and wiring diagrams in truck) LOL)
good thing of Volvo - warm in sleeper when it f-ng cold outdoors, especially with smaller cab like VM.
Cab is made of steel, heavy, smooth and safe.
One more bad thing. headlamps dim... so prepare to switch to HID.
and it is not all. Volvo discontinued tandem hypoid axels, they make hub reduction tandem axes so they use Spicer tandem axes on highway 6x4 trucktors, and I do really like meritor axels! -
I know this is an older post, but we have 2-465hp volvo engines in trucks identical to mine with a 530 ISX. I can better the one by 10 gallons a day easily, all day long, every day of the year and the other I can equal and sometimes better. Oh...that's right I'm 65hp better and 200# torque and do the job easier. And the problems we've experienced with the Volvo's compared to the ISX have pretty much made these Volvo's, the last we'll buy.

ISX hands down! Volvos are weak in EGR, electrical and fuel department and it's a big joke when pulling up hill or engine braking. In short excuse of an engine. ISXs 04-07 are known for it's EGR weakness, until you unplug it. Otherwise awesome power and engine braking along with great mpg. I have outpulled every friend of mine with D16, D13 and D12 with my 06 780 with ISX 550hp/1850tq 3.58 rears with EGR-delete, PDI intake manifold and Pittsburgh Power performance muffler. Almost needed a pair of binoculars to spot them in my mirror when pulling up hill. I'm averaging 7.5-8 mpg (US) with 65-80k lb. reefer. Just look at those lines of preowned trucks at the dealers 10 with Volvo engines and one with ISX.
