I have had this conversation several times before and have even gotten better rates after the broker quit laughing.
this depicts a real phone call on a load (names changed to make it funnier)
Ring, ring
Broker: Screw YOU right brokerage how may I direct your call?
carreir: I'm calling to find out how much a load pays?
Broker: Which one?
carrier: Dallas to houston
broker: You see it's a partial don't you ?
carrier: Well since I have you on the phone how partial?? and whats the
dims and what is it?
Broker: It's 40 foot long 6 inch pipe and it pays 200 dollars
carrier: thats 75 cents a mile how generous
broker: well you can "match it up" with something.
carrier: Ok, Do you have this magical piece of match up freight?
broker: well. well no but you can find it
carrier: where ?
Broker: out there
carrier: now lets see if i get this right you say? I can match up this
Non existant piece of freight with your freight and make some
money? And your freight is 40 foot long? I quit believing in the
easter bunny, tooth fairy and santa clause long ago.
So what your trying to do is see if I'm stupid enough to work for
less than free?
Broker: (laughing by now) well I guess you could look at it like that.
Carrier: If it cost 80 cents a mile to operate and I haul your crap at
75 cents a mile I'm going backwards a nickel a mile right?
broker : I see your point
carrier: If I get three of these fine loads on at once I'm going backwards
15 cents a mile am I not?
Carrier: How many of these guys you find like this? that will work for less
free?
Broker: (hysterical laughing by now) Quite a few.
Carrier: guess you don't have one for this load huh?
broker: Nope and I really need to move it what do you need to do it?
carrier: 500 dollars and quick pay with no fee .
broker: I got to charge a quick pay fee .
Carrier: ok , 525
Broker: done deal, but don't tell no body
I've had this happen several times .
I will have to addmitt though I did haul ONE load for 75 a mile and one for 99.8 amile . Both time trying to leave loredo and el paso
How many of you have heard this before?
