TTR is full of threads that go into great detail on how you can get a job up there. Lots of threads! Actually I'm surprised you haven't seen them yet...
--Do yourself a favor, shoot for higher then 60G's. Most guys are doing MUCH better. And remember, the ad says "UP TO" $61,000. That claim coming from a mega-carrier tells me the top 5% or less will make that working for them. Any "premium" you see in 60G's will be swallowed up by living expenses. I keep reading that housing is very scarce.
You will end up with the "low paying" driving job working in harsh conditions. lose-lose.rjones56 Thanks this. -
Might have something to do with your level of experience... 0 experience can be tough anywhere... including ND.

Just getting a job is better than unemployment. If you are a quality driver, your isn't going to go down.

I cannot imagine how devastated these little towns will be when the boom goes bust. This thing is going to fall apart just as quick as it started. Leaving this place with an abundance of really really cheap housing.
I was offered a 1099 job starting at 80K in yep, you guessed it Williston. But they guy wanted me to relocate there and live there. Yeah, with rooms to rent going for $800 bucks and him wanting me to relocate for 80K I said no thanks.
It's going to come and go just like the ice road trucking thing, thanks to the TV show, as the crabbing thing, thanks to a TV show....All they need now is a TV show on this and it's over....
We have ex fishing boat guys working at our plant, 15K for 3 months out to sea they told me.....You kidding me, they told me they would work 16+ hour days of hard physical labor for 3 months straight. I just did the math, that comes out to $11.16/hr......
Same thing is bound to happen here...... -
Hopefully the oil and gas opportunities for smaller fleets remains strong - with the oil and gas services companies recognizing quality over quantity.
Word on the street is that these guys do not mess around. -
80K a year aint enough to live in an icebox like North Dakota.
-
Come to think of it-61K a year ain`t enough to drive for schneider either.
-
Do the math:
Up to 60k
- roughly 33% for Uncle Scam
=42k
- conservative average for monthly rent 800 per month
= 35k
- groceries, cell phones, toiletries, insurance, misc. let's be conservative and say 400 a month
= 31k
There are 168 hours in a seven day week you will be working around seventy of them if you sleep 8 hours a night that is 126 hours or 75% of your life for peanuts.
The worst part is when an ad says up to 60k you are most likely looking at 45k -
The last 3 posts nailed it. This is why I'm saying these little towns are going to suffer the most when this "fizzles" out in a few years. Sharp.dressed.man, couldn't of said it better myself. Once the "big names" start moving in and cutting rates, it's the start of the end. The only thing missing is Swift, Werner, USX and they'll take it down like they did OTR. Pretty soon you'll be able to BUY a house for $800 instead of rent a room with 3 other room-mates for that price (For the record, these are confirmed and reasearched REAL prices for rent. Not heresay or heard from someone who knows someone).
And, not to come off prude. But $800/mo to rent a room with 3 other people is plain stupid no matter how much you make.
