No way! Thats not possible
-
If they are truely running on broker freight than probably not. But if they are established with a decent group of brokers that give them the loads that most guys never hear about about...then they might have a chance. I just don't see the sense in office personel if the loads are booked through brokers. Use a office person to go drum up local customers and then profits will increase.

Sure they can survive,
but are their trucks insured ???
Do they pay their share of fees and taxes............?? -
Anything is possible with positive thinking .just have to work hard a what you do .i know a few folks that have a few trucks and do okay .manage to save some moneys too .its not an easy task ,but it can be done.

Sounds like a family business. There are a million of them in the USA alone, just pop your head into a small strip mall restaurant. You'll have dad or mom as the chef, dad or mom as the server, kids washing dishes or being the hostess, etc. They won't get rich, but they are providing for themselves and being their own boss.

5 trucks, 3 office personal, 1 Mechanic
Ya, if the drivers are all in the family.
The office personnel have a second job.
The Mechanic takes on outside business.Cummins_444 Thanks this. -
I second this post. The truck to office personal ratio is out of wack. With five trucks what do the other two people do? Stare at each other? The mechanic better be doing outside work also, because five trucks wont keep him busy. If he is swamped with the five trucks then they are definitely in trouble. They need all five trucks running, because each truck has to feed 1.8 people. One truck goes down now we are talking 2.25 people looking to eat from the 4 remaining trucks. Going down in a big ball of flames. -
98% of these responses have no idea what there posting about.
I can name 2 carriers that are almost just what the OP has said, one has been in business sense 1940 and have 6 trucks 1 lease truck 2 in the office and 1 mechanic and the other has been in business sense 2004 with 7 trucks 4 lease trucks and no full time mechanic and 2 in the office. While both neither relies 100% on broker fright they both have there own and share with one another when one cant cover a load. -
Can be done if they keep all their other over heads low.
Very difficult if they are just transporting general loads handed to them by brokers.
If you are doing out of the ordinary type of work with specialist knowledge and equipment you need people.
If the office staff are family it may just be a case of 1 employed and 2 unemployed just not admitting it.
Do the 3 office staff have 3 different households?
Are 3 salaries being paid?
At our small company.
7 in the office (4 family members).
22 trucks (All paid for) +10 other pieces of equipment.
3 Mechanics 3 assistants.
1 Yard supervisor.
10 other general hands/laborers.
2 forklift drivers.
Our office staff broker out at least 2to3 loads for every load we do on our own trucks.
We also have a small warehouse and transshipment/storage yard.
Our mechanics moonlight as riggers a lot of the time or operate our yard equipment if needed.Fabricate items for rigging or difficult loads.
Most are busy all the time.
If our only revenue stream was general freight from brokers we would be dead in the water.
