Penske will rent to you. They usually require a $5k deposit, but will take a credit card for it.

OK, I have a question for everyone. Should I swap? I got a call from the regional manager this morning, he says there is going to be at least 3000 bucks in charges that is not covered. And this morning they found that the jakes had damage as well and they needed to be rebuilt. (Also yesterday afternoon when I called they said a rocker shaft was damaged and they didn't have one in stock so they were air freighting one in for today.) So since stoops has 100% financial recourse, they are afraid this truck is "Lemon". So they want me to swap a "LIKE FOR LIKE" truck. I don't like this at all. I have $ invested and time in this truck. They would have to swap tool boxes, dr. seat, do a 3 axle alignment, I just put brakes and drums on the steers, virgin rubber on the drives, not to mention all my personal stuff and equipment. They have 2 06 columbias in stock, NOT in fremont of course. They called to find out the payoff on the current truck, and the list sale price on the in stock trucks is $4000 less than what my balance. I've made 3 payments so far and in essence And both stock trucks have about 30,000 more miles than the one I have now. This just doesn't feel right, the replacement truck is a higher risk truck than the one I have now. I know some history on this one, not the others. And by the way I still would have the same warranty on the replacement truck. They have NOT SAID WHAT THE WARRANTY ON THE LONG BLOCK IS YET.
So thoughts anyone???? I need to make a decision by the end of the day so please respond asap. thanks

    Better the devil you know...

I think if it was an trade up, it'd be something to consider; but equal with a fresh engine in yours? NO WAY!

Keep your truck. Do not swap......and I'd question the additional charges since this all happened due to their neglance in the first place and not doing the overhaul correct the first time. Stick with your truck and it's new motor. All they will do is fix it and sell it for more than they could of sold one of the other Columbias for. They are trying to take advantage of you and not in the good way ;)

Yeah that sounds like they are trying to make a quick buck so they make some of there money back on all the work they are having to do to your truck. I would ask for them to show you the proof that the things you are paying for were not damaged due to the engine failure. If they cant show you proof then they should not be holding you responsible for those costs.

Such are the difficult decisions in the world of throw-away trucks.

I'd hate to let that fresh iron go.

If you swap, Stoops will sell your truck when finished at a premium, touting the fresh long block.

Keep the old one if you can afford the extras. My last two in a row cost anywhere from $5-10k to get to a reliable state. That's what the replacement truck will cost you, but only after you likely come out on the bad end of the shell game with the values and note.

Or, if you don't have confidence in the repairs, negotiate harder for a better truck offer. To me, "like for like" means "equal." Before it blew up the second time, you'd already paid for an overhaul the first time. Make sure that is taken to account when figuring out which in-stock truck is "equal" to your old one. Similar year and miles plus a fresh in-frame ought to equal a newer truck with fewer miles.

Thanks you guys. I replied via email "No Thank you, I'll keep the one I have now." I spoke with the service manager, who said that the DetroitDiesel Rep. ruled the breakdown a "cyninderliner failure" but that they couldn't totally rule out that the jakes stuck, which could cause the same break down. I was not using my jakes when this happened. So, the DD Rep instructed the service manager to rebuild the jakes before running the truck. Funny, no one told me that 4 weeks ago when the rep was at the dealer. Stoops is afraid to ask Detroit to cover the cost of rebuilding the jakes and that along with other misc parts and supplies are estimated around $3000.00. Stoops gave me their word they would "assist" if anything happened and they have so far. They covered 1/2 the cost of the super overhaul and now I feel they want to get me in a riskier truck than the one I have, and sell mine to recoop their loss.
I expect to get a call from the regional manager yet today to argue the $3000.00, I don't even want to talk with him. I just want my truck back so I can go to work. The 3000 bucks is not my concern, just like the rish of losing my house and my $16250.00 in lost revenue is not their concern. UUUGGHHHH

Well I was wrong. NO call from any one. I called the service manager, who informed me in an unfriendly tone there will be a $3000 bill that needs to be paid before the truck can leave, so you better talk to the sales dept. or something. I replied "how do you expect me to pay when you have had my truck for a month?" His response " I don't know how you run your businesss, so I don't know how it's getting paid, but it needs to be paid before the truck is picked up." And now the regional and the sales manager are not available. I left voice mail for each no call back yet. I feel like they are avoiding me and playing the "time game". They have it and I don't. Wow, I never saw this coming.
