This law is nationwide... not just in Illinois. As far as I know, you can still use a cellphone, but it must be hands free. Cb is okay too. Do you remember what paper? I didn't see it in the News-Tribune (Lasalle-Peru).
-
Jan 1 2012 it became Federal law i do believe so it's illegal in all 50 states. Must use headset for phone...
-
Jan.3 2012 but if you're a 4 wheeler, do whatever you want. -
i dont have head set .i have onstar bluetooth paired .
-
Is it illegal period, or a handsfree restriction like the Nationwide law others have mentioned?

From Illinois State Police website...
Enforcement of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulation. This new regulation prohibits the use of a hand-held mobile device by anyone driving a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV). The regulation also prohibits Motor Carriers from requiring drivers to use a hand-held device while operating a CMV on a highway. The only exceptions are when the mobile device is being used with a hands-free application, when the CMV is pulled over and completely stopped at a safe location, or when a CMV driver is requesting emergency police or fire services.
Since the inception of distracted driving laws in 2010, the Illinois State Police has issued over 19,540 citations and written warnings to distracted drivers. Commercial motor vehicle operators account for 2.5 percent of the citations and warnings issued.
A mobile telephone is considered a mobile communication device that falls under or uses any commercial mobile radio service as defined by the Federal Communications Commission. The definition does not include two-way or Citizens Band (CB) radio services.
CMV drivers will only be allowed to utilize a hand-held mobile telephone under the following circumstances:
- When the driver uses a hands-free means of communication (i.e. Bluetooth, ear piece);
- When the driver has moved the vehicle to the side of, or off, a highway and has halted in a location where the vehicle can safely remain stationary, or
- The driver is involved in an emergency situation that requires police or fire services.

LaSall News Trib. They really need some reporters or proof readers though! It was on page 2 of Mondays paper, right at the top. I sent the paper to my sister in Wisconsin so she could see all the Westclox story,so I don't have it here now. Any way,the story sounded like an Illinois law.The 2nd part was about the speed limit for big trucks going to 65.???? We've beengoing 65 in Illinois for a year now. I meant to call the paper, and ask them what they were smoking,oh well. Thanks for the replies everyone.

As far as the 65 MPH speed limit, that now applies to ALL (except Chicago land) 4 lane highways. Example- US 34 from Galesburg to Monmouth and on to Macomb. This is 65 now. The previous law was for Interstate highways only.
The Westclox fire was huge.... over 35 departments responded to it. I read that it could smolder/burn for another week or two. I haven't been by there yet. -
Like i said, the News Trib needs some new reporters and proofreaders. The story was very incomplete! Westclox story is big,I could see the smoke from my house-I live south of the river in Oglesby. I drove past it tonight [thursday] and it is still smoldering. I pulled trailers around for that company for 2 days about a year ago. Loaded trailer out to the lot across the street, empty trailer into dock, repeat, repeat, etc. I took one container to the landfill for them also. They had so much scrap cardboard and plastic in there, that on the second day I waited for 2 hours for them to load a trailer, and they finally sent me home.Said they have the material to load, but can't FIND it!!
