Martin, the owner of the company I work for, completely forgot to renew the NM weight distance permits at the beginning of the year. While I waited for Martin to quickly renew them online so I could proceed, I noticed a steady stream of drivers coming in who were in a similar situation.
I got to see first hand what dieselbear and scalemaster have to deal with when drivers have little English skills. It took the officers some time to explain to two Asian drivers from California that their IFTA and NM weight distance permits were two different things and while their IFTA was up to date, their NM permit was not and they'd have to buy a trip permit. Finally they seemed to get it and bought their permits.
While they told me my company could renew online so I'd not be out of pocket for a trip permit, I guess the DOT officer decided not to make things more complicated trying to explain that to these guys.
D'oh! Got stopped at the Gallup, NM POE!

Gotta love NM! Four years ago, first trip with this truck, we'd gone on their website to buy the permit, but some snafu in their system would not let it generate the actual permit, only a receipt. A phone call assured us that the official receipt would do the trick. NOT!
I nearly lol'd when the lady behind the counter told me, "that's just a receipt, it's not a permit."Yeah lady, it's a permit from the NM Dept of Revenue with my vin and name on it, that Santa Fe assured us was ok. (apparently, everyone in the state except the Gallup poe was aware of the issue.) My smile disappeared when I had to buy the trip permit, and the transaction fees were as much as the permit! (Never got caught w/o cash at that place again.)Last edited: Jan 7, 2012
