In a large city or heavy traffic lane, it is safer to be in the middle lane to avoid the merging traffic.
If you are running with the traffic in the middle lane at speed over the stated limit, there is no problem.
If doing this and someone passes on the right, they are speeding. So, in reality, which is worse?
Just some of the stupid things I see

Most of the time, that traffic in the middle lane is a truck governed BELOW the posted speed limit. It is NOT "safer" to obstruct traffic...not in ANY circumstance. Just as you don't like having to reduce your speed for merging traffic that is not yet up to speed, vehicles that CAN AND ARE traveling at the flow of traffic do not like to have to reduce their speed/change lanes to get around you. Move to the right, or get up to speed. If you cannot get up to speed, move to the right or get off the road.
I'm a firm believer that a vehicle ought to be capable of running the speed limit on a road if it is going to be on a road.Les2 Thanks this. -
There is not much that can be done about it. There is a long line of trucks moving just over the speed limit in the center lane.
I think the speed issue will eventually become a moot point. They have been talking about the speed limiting on the trucks for many years. It could be in place soon with the fool LaHood in there. Many 4 wheelers would like it and also to see that the trucks are required to be in the right lane and YIELD to them when they enter the interstate. -
So, following the line of thinking you pose, why should any state be losing money? Put the patrols on the highways and start writing tickets to all the speeders. Or better, why even post a speed limit if the majority of drivers are going to ignore it? I would guess more than half the drivers on the roads will exceed the posted limit by 5 MPH at least. Or, why not use satellites that can detect speed, pull the license numbers from vehicles, and mail them a ticket?
In the situation you stated, even though I am obeying the speed limit, I would be ticketed for obstructing traffic flow. What if somebody who is speeding hits me? Do I get the ticket or do they?
Why is it a law that headlights are required when wipers are on, but I've yet to see anybody pulled over for it. In fact, a few weeks ago we were having a downpour, and I passed 3 LEO's that didn't have their lights on, but their wipers were going?
I'm simply saying that there are too many laws and nobody follows them and enforcement of said laws seems lacking.

I dunno, if the cars are passing me on the right and blaring their horns at me....... I might be driving the wrong direction on the wrong side of the freeway.
Yup that would get me pulled over. Probably a trip to the looney bin too! -

Chicago does it to themselves by restricting trucks to the right 2 lanes. The "passing" truck lane gets clogged up with knuckleheads who don't know how to keep right except when passing (as is the law).
You would think "Slower Traffic Keep Right" and "Keep Right Except To Pass" would be an easy enough concept to understand, but I guess not. -
I was going 67 on a straight stretch of highway; I was coming up on a pickup obviously going MUCH slower than me, so I signaled to pass. As I start to pass, I'm having to speed up more and more and he is staying right beside me. At 73 I slowed back down and let him get ahead. So what good does the sign do when you have jerks like that? And the chances are had there been a HWP around, I would have got the ticket for speeding because I was in the passing lane.

in a ungoverned car like you were, speed up, pass him, get in front of him, slow back down to where you wanna run, and do the same to him as you flip him off if he tries to pass you again....
OR you can be like me, use your airhorn to give the idiot a heart attack so maybe just maybe they might think twice before doing something stupid again...
