I am 21 years old, almost 22. I have always wanted to become a Truck driver, i love driving and time to my self, i have talked to my GF about this and shes really supportive of it. My dad drove for about 7 years after retiriing from being a FireFighter and he loved it except for customs in the USA lol. I have my G liecence and am thinking about attending Truck driving school in June, to go to my AZ. I have a good savings account and good credit. The other thing is i really want to move to Vancouver with my GF after i get my AZ liecence. Any tips from you guys? I want to get the new Cascadia :biggrin_25519:

    1st, get your license.

2nd, spend some time driving OTHER PEOPLE'S trucks, so that you can learn what you like and what you dislike about each truck you drive. Pay attention to how each truck is spec'd, and how well it performs the job you're asking it to do. Keep track of the revenue and expenses...basically run the truck as though it was your own to see just how much truck you can afford.

3rd, find a good company. One with both company drivers and O/O's, where they treat you right, you make decent money, and the O/O's are happy and making decent money. Put in some time there learning as much as you can about every aspect of the company....gaining seniority within the company and a good reputation with the dispatchers.

4th, buy the best truck you can afford, that has the specs you desire in order to do the job you want it to do...and lease it back on to the company you've been working for.

That's the short version of what I did....paid my truck off last month.

Although I have no intentions of trading in my truck, if you want one of those "new" Cascadias, you probably won't be able to start off in one. Buy a truck you can afford, pay it off, and trade it in on a slightly better truck. It might take you 2 or 3 trucks to get to the point where the truck you are trading in is worth enough to take a big enough bite out of the cost of a "new" truck...but if you don't overextend yourself with high payments, you'll have a much greater chance of success.

Remember: When things get tight, you can stretch a dollar a heck of a lot farther when it isn't owed to a dozen different people 6 months before you earn it.

A bunch of years behind the wheel of someone else's truck would be the way to start. That way you can decide whether that is really what you want to do. Owning a truck is not what some may lead you believe. With the low rates and high operating expenses, It's not nearly as lucrative as it was years ago.
I have owned my owned 4 of my own trucks, and sold my last one 6 years ago. I made money as a truck owner. When I sold my last truck there was no profit left. I was making drivers wages or less. Why would you want to take all the risk for the same or less money that you could make as a driver.

Why would a Canadian company want or need to hire an unknown/unproven entity from half ways around the world?

I can assure you there isn't a driver shortage in Canada...only a shortage of truck drivers willing to work cheap.
