Yes this is a slow time for most all carriers....post holidays everyone is broke! -
No oversize loads for AT. Yet.
sammycat Thanks this. -
If I could give one piece of advice it'd be to try to avoid hooking straps to the rub rail, especially on an aluminum trailer. Ive never had one fail but I have been written up by DOT for it. The Great Dane I pulled had a heavy plate just behind the slide for the winches to hook straps to.
American-Trucker and alex94 Thank this. -
well what a flustercluck of a day! im wiped!
Ok where to start..... January 10th......0645am, Hamma down! 07:15am Fuel at the J in Kenly, NC. Pull into a Rest Area about 09:15am to read my (just got) load assingment.... Pickup 1400...
(Must bring 8 4x4's)SHET!
So i'm like (stupid me) mmmmm Where do i get 4x4's?
Dispatch: Home Depot/ Lowes Duhhhhh
Me:ohhhhhhh
So I head to Home Depot, of course they DO NOT SELL HARD WOOD, only pine....crap! So i call dispatch;
Me: they only have pine they dont sell hard wood
Dispatch: you cant use them? I dont see why not, do you?
Me: what the hello do i know? all i know is what i learned in Houston (they said HARD WOOD ONLY
Dispatch: hold on (holding.......) its ok you can use them
I get there wait in line, pull on scale (steel plant) big ol sign (all drivers must supply own HARD WOOD dunage......or you can buy it from us!
WTF i could have just got the RIGHT stuff here!!!!!!! Stupid CHR brokers(who BTW didnt even know i needed dunage!
Anyway i had to sit for an hour (since i push my load time back to 3 so i could find wood (hehehe) then find this place (ended up getting there at 205opps
Anyhoo i get in, deal with loader that dont know left from right, nice guy, just doesnt know left from rright i guess
He loads me up with some mini I beam looking things (42,000lbs worth) That i need to chain and TARP ewwww.
So I throw 6 chains ( had been planning at least 8 possibley 10). So this other driver kept watching me (im sure i looked like and idiot/rookie) but anyway so i turn around and said "how many chains would you put on this load" not that i really cared i was just courious ( i was thinking 42,000/ 5000 = xxx) so yea. Anyway he says "you already have enough but since you have them spaced like that i'd throw one more on right there and your good to go"
So i throw on 2 more and called it a day, since i was running out of my 14 and daylight QUICK at this point. I tightened them down as tight as i could. The load is 40' long.....8 chains. If it had been earlyer i might have put all 10 chains and maybe a few straps just so i could have somthing to tighen as i go along (since WTF would you tarp OVER chains.....how do you check them enroute???????????????)
Anyway, got the chains done, put 2 tarps on (stupid sheety tarps with holes) 1 big one and 1 small one, and bungied them down. And away i went (after meeting another LST driver) who hooked me up with the secret to doing the back of the tarp!
There scale is stupid does all 5 axles seperate!
So i go to a normal scale PILOT, 34,250 on the drives!!!!!!! WTF (good thing i didnt listen to the broker she says Make sure you fuel BEFORE you load make sure your FULL....stupid brokers. I had 3/4 when i went in.
So anyway here i sit at the Pilot in Bowman, SC 17 hour 10 min from receiver in dallas, tx deliver 11am 01/12.....So yep im idleing off what i can tonight, i need to loose 250 lbs.....1 800 JENNY!
so ya, i'm thinking about moveing the 2 other tarps and the left over dunage (i only needed 4!) and whatnot to the back to i dont have to play the 20 gal here and there crap...
I havent had to slide a 5th wheel in forever....which way do i move it to take weight off the drives and put it on the steers? forward im assumeing...right?
oh and the other LST driver....his load same load....13 straps no tarp (why cant i get the easy onelol

I hope things get better for you. Seems like lots of sitting, lack of freight, somewhat disorganized, etc. Maybe that is just SOP for a large open deck carrier. It makes me feel better about what we do to get our new drivers rolling. Try to keep a positive attitude...good luck!
American-Trucker Thanks this. -
Good ol CH Robinson. Last load I pulled for them was "for sure a flatbed load". Yeah right!!! Got to the shipper and find out that the load would be 15 feet tall on a flatbed. I had to go all the way back to the yard drop my flat, grab my stepdeck and they had the nerve to get upset when the boss asked for another $100 for our trouble. Gotta love ol CHR.

I always ask a lot of questions before accepting a load from any broker.SheepDog Thanks this.
