NOT that I'm for free rides "cuz there ain't none!!"
However I got the state Unemployment office to get me a grant. I had to take silly tests (practice your algebra) and apply for jobs online I had no intention of taking but It was the easy way to get $6000.00!!!
I start school Oct 1
Check it out it could save you a bundle!!
Yesterday Werner called and said I was Prehired and welcom after I grad.
I don't know if i will work for them but it is nice to be wanted
-
i thought this comparison might be worth bringing up.
company sponsored training = work for them one year to pay off school then look for a job more to your liking if necessary.
pay for school yourself and find a co that hires unexperienced school grads = work for them one year to get enough experience to work for a more desirable company.
THERE ARE ABOUT AS MANY COMPANIES THAT SPONSOR TRAINING AS THERE ARE COMPANIES THAT HIRE UNEXPERIENCED DRIVERS.
EITHER WAY DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE CHOOSING A COMPANY AND PLAN ON WORKING THERE ONE YEAR

what school did you attend?

I ain't gonna knock Werner too much, but I did go to work for them. I did all they asked of me and that means, "hurry up and WAIT." I decided not to mention prior experience because it was all undocumented and I didn't want to hassle with "proof" I knew would be hard to get. So I went through 275 hours of training, which turned into 295 and they wanted to make it 325 after that, BECAUSE they were out of trucks. I was with Werner for THREE(3) months before they finally had a truck for me. Training and orientation took less than 2. None of that time counts toward experience, so I was told. It's not really true.
-
What do you mean undocumented? If you're driving then you're getting experience if not then how can anyone expect that to count for experience? -
My husband got free training as well. He was laid off from a company that went out of business due to overseas trade....so he qualified for the program---but I can't remember the name of it. We didn't pay for anything.

If you claim experience, they want to see a W2 or something to prove you worked wherever. Being the truck I used to drive belonged to my own family and didn't require paperwork, and that I did it for free, there's no way to prove it happened. I pulled only a flatbed, and hauled equipment. Knowing that is one thing. Proving it is another. I was passed over by 3 local companies who knew me already, simply because they wanted 2yrs recent verifiable experience for their wonderful racket.... er... insurance companies. I mention those three because all 3 were looking for a driver to haul equipment.
The Werner thing is stranger than fiction. What they told me until I called their bluff is, if I'm waiting for my truck and not actually driving, there's no experience gained. True, but when you're off work, the same applies. It isn't the drivers fault though, when he's awaiting a truck. They also told me that no training hours account for experience(though it's very design is exactly that) because you're not directly on the payroll(most Werner drivers are NOT) of Werner. They said, and still say, until they give you the certificate of qualified driver, you're not gaining experience. This is a ploy, of course, to help them keep drivers for that full 1st yr.
One big problem with the industry is knowing so many local jobs are available, but that these small companies only hire people they can, based on the insurance costs, etc. Can't blame them, since insurance is such a scam these days, but it sucks for each party. I saw a big "DRIVERS WANTED" sign for a dirt/rock hauler co. and stopped in there too. These are day cabs with 18yrd dumps behind. They are in the same boat. Prove the experience or our insurance company won't cover you. It doesn't matter that you're 30 or more yrs old, only the ins. co. matters.
Now that I've changed the subject(sorry), that's one thing no school is likely to share up front. When they try to help you get that driving job, they expect you won't care if it's 48, regional, ded. They expect you to thank them for their hard work(which is frankly only the students hard work). And they don't think you'll care if that job requires you to leave your state for a time to do paperwork or whatever. -
I'm aimed at starting their CDL school on October 8th. Paying for it myself so I don't have to be a financial slave. Any suggestions or comments on that school? (they don't have my money yet).
