Do you take off in second or third gear? I cant seem to not grind third when taking off through an intersection. most likely because i am rushing the shift before making the turn. im in a driving school so they wont let us shift while the tractor is crooked

One of my trucks has a super 10. I usually take off in second. You can't get in a hurry when shifting a super 10. -
i allways start off in the lowest possible gear...(i rarely used the deep reduction however), just stay in the gear and go slow if you have to, its not a race
-
EMPTY 3 GEAR,LOADED 2 GEAR.
-
Just depends on the truck, the weight of the load and if youre on any kind of hill.
If you are running around empty, you should be fine starting in 3rd. -
I drive a Super10 in school as well. Our instructor has us starting in 3rd.
-
I think that 3rd is a little too high to start, but when you are empty it probably won't hurt anything. I would not start off with a load in 3rd. If I had a heavy load and on a grade then I would probably start in 1st. Otherwise, I would start in 2nd.

I have a lightning 10 which is the same thing as the super 10, except the splitter is an electric servo instead of air operated. When empty or light (under 30k in the box), I start off in 3rd on level ground. Otherwise I start in 1st.

FOLLOW INSTRUCTORS ADVICE @ least to start

I think most will say to start in 3rd when empty (as you are when in school). Once you can get started & go thru the intersection COMPLETELY before upshifting, it will be a lot easier then starting in 2nd & having to go past the normal operating range in order to clear the intersection before the shift then grind into third because you have the rpms up too high (the reason i think you are grinding from 2 to 3)& trying to complete the shift to quick.
/\/\ adressed the Q \/\/ now to ramble
Definitely ask the instructor his opinion & if you see another student do the same thing ask then as it gives you the instruction & example with out the pressure of only being in the seat a few days.
Not all instructors are good communicators & most seem to need to be prodded a lil to get the info you need.
Also remember part of his job while teaching is to induce a little stress with barking commands, asking seemingly meaningless questions, blocking the shifter, etc, while you are behind the wheel & while it can get frustrating @ times that stress is nothing (& is a prep course for) like you will find on the road in tight jams.
good luck driver n be safe -
The trick is to start out in 10th gear than you dont have to shift.
CenutryClass Thanks this.
