Thanks for the support guys. Maybe one day we'll be able to share a pot of coffee at truck stop. My plan is pretty simple, (although the best laid plans fall apart after the first move). Right now I'm reading the DMV manual over and over for my permit waiting to get my W2 for my tax return so I can get some money for everything. Not sure how it is elsewhere, but in PA it's gonna cost me around $150 for the permit after adding all the endorsements and having to renew my license. After that, I have a friend who drove OTR for about 5 years who's gonna teach me to drive and in the mean time, try to put some feelers out to get me a job. If that doesn't work, I figure I'm going to contact Prime. I know I'll probably have to go through their training program even though I'll have my CDL but that's fine with me. When you're a greenhorn, you can never learn enough or have enough training!

Thanks for your response Rag. I figured out I make 26k a year now. I don't think I can do much worse than that. And I figure that I'll pay my dues to Prime or where ever I'm at for a year maybe two then "shop around". I figure I could probably use my unique situation as a bargaining chip to maybe squeeze a few extra cmp. Also, I'd really like to pull flatbeds which they might like since it shows not only do I want to work as much a possible, but I want to "work". Not just be a door swinger. No offense to you dry van haulers, you guys pull the majority of our stuff.

Only one problem with your plan.Most carriers wont hire you for their training program unless you have training from a school.This is due to the insurance requirements associated with the business now.You might be able to get on with a small company somewhere,but the my buddy trained me approach isnt going to work real well.Good luck to you.For these companies to be able to insure you,they have to show you have a certain amount of schooling.

@frog- I already anticipated that problem which is why I said I wouldn't mind having to go through their training. As a driver, you can never have enough training, plus, I figure I'll be a few steps ahead of everyone so maybe I won't be as nervous and I'll be able to focus more which will be a big help with my anxiety.

Thanks for the mention of Big Rig, I just watched it for the first time and feel it is a very good representation of trucking. I spent 20 yrs otr (1989-2009, 16 yrs with one company) I truly enjoyed most of my career, had a little burnout going on after 17yrs but still all in all I'd do it again! I dont have much family either so I'm thinking when mom passes I'll go live on the road for a few years and save up some money. It amazed me how many highways and truck stops I recognized from the movie.
