Just want to say I am very interested in driving and I was wondering if anyone has any tips for me. A few of my family members are truck drivers and they do really #### good for themselves. Right now I am saving a bit of money to go to a driving school just to learn more so when i take the test I am ready. (I'm planning to ride and learn from him for the next 4 months then go to school around May) Right now my uncle is letting me ride with him and teaching me the basic things about trucking (he has 15 years exp.) He hauls propane and makes good money. also I have a guaranteed job with a good pay. I'm 21 and no kids, no wife and live with my parents.(yes, eventually when I'm stable I'll finally move out lol) I'm a very hard worker and very excited with the challenges.

Anyways just wondering what should I really focus on and what should I pay close attention too? I always take a notebook on the road and try to study off what he tells me but I would like to expand my knowledge by asking other veterans. (I am from the Northeast -Rhode Island)

My advice would be to keep doing what you're doing. Riding with family members will give you a huge edge when you do go to school. And go to school, you should. Learn all you can about HOS rules, scaling, shifting, etc. before stepping foot in a driving classroom. Any knowledge is good knowledge and it'll pay off for you later. What may seem insignificant now can have enormous benefits for you later on. Find a reputable school. Most community college truck driving programs are the best, at least better than any cdl "mill". Take your time and do it right. Being single and not having kids is also to your advantage as you continue. You're at the perfect age and you can make a great career out of it if you keep focused (like it sounds you are). About the best advice I can give you is to concentrate and learn all you can. Remember, every driver has a very important responsibility, that is to keep themselves and all other motorists safe. That should be your primary focus. Don't get into a hurry when driving and always allow yourself more than enough time to get where you're going. Best of luck.

Sounds good. In addition to your family's views, always study the CDL book also. You need the book to pass your DMV tests, but your family can give you real world experience. You're doing good with having the best of both worlds. Stay out of trouble and make sure your MVR is in good status. Many different companies have different requirements on felonies, misdermeanors, tickets, etc. Just remember to stay out of the drug crowd and you could get your experience and make good for yourself like your family members.

When you finally get out there all I can say is take your time...A couple extra minutes isnt going to make that much diffrence contrary to the way some of the hot shots out there drive & you see them everyday & sooner or later youll see them again in the ditch & without a job...Good luck my friend..

    DON'T GET IN A HURRY!!!

Get out and look (GOAL) isn't just a catch phrase from the safety sallies... It works.

IF you want to be treated like a pro, then you have to perform, and ACT like one.

    And lastly...

Do your homework. RECRUITERS DO LIE! Check with the folks with their butts in the seat before agreeing to attend anyone's orientation, and know for sure what they pay and how they pay. Otherwise you can wind up getting the shaft.
