1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

    Hi all,
Im im a bind here. Sorry for the length.

I moved out to western WY a few weeks ago and I've been looking for jobs. Im a college grad with a degree in teaching and two years teaching experience in the last three years. This year, we moved and I didn't get a teaching job so Im out of work.
About two weeks ago, I went to the local workforce center to see if I could get funding for going to a tech college and taking a CDL course. The one in the area spits you out in 11 days. hmm. Personally, Id like to go to Sage if possible.

Heres the bind. My Options and their issues:
    1. The Tech college. 11 days, CDL, Haz Mat endorsement.
Good: i get done in 11 days. Truck is provided.
Bad: I have to go get a DOT long form physical on my own, 40 bucks for the CDL, Pee cup test, and MVR all out of my own pocket. Truck is provided one time, and if I have to retake the test, 150 bucks for the truck each time. No job placement assistance either.
Cost: for course, 3700 bucks....probably over 4 grand after all the other crap is tossed in.

    2. Sage. 4-5 weeks. Hazmat, Tanker, doubles, triples...all the endorsements I need.
Good: All endorsements. Everything I need is provided, permit....etc. I think. Might ahe to double check.
Bad: a month or more. its about 3 hours away so commuting is not an option.
Cost: 4300 bucks. Plus if I go there, Id have to find lodging.

Now heres the issue. The workforce center person Im working with will only run me through one funding program that provides 3 grand. To be blunt, each day we are getting more in debt and I simply dont have the extra money to cover the additional cost.
There is the workforce investment Act funding, which would cover my going to Sage (all the tuition, lodging, meals...etc) but she refuses to sign me up for it as I told a coworker of hers that I might go back to teaching if I was given the chance (as far and remote as that is since the year already started and an open position does not mean I will be the only person applying). And the simply dont want to 'waste' 8 grand on tuition and lodging if I was to end up taking a teaching position down the road.

Either way, I filled out the paperwork and signed up for the 3 grand loan and hope I can find a way to make due.

The problem is that that could take anywhere between 3-5 weeks for approval. All the while, Im sitting on my butt doing nothing. And the bills are piling up. Plus we have a mortgage on a trailer from the town we just moved from.

Ive tried and cna't seem to find any local company willing to train a driver so Im looking for national fleets.
    Swift - last resort
Roehl - too far away, they don't hire this far west.

Are there any GOOD companies that also train? I don't think I have really seen that information on here.

Thanks all, and sorry for the length
    Ryan

One thing you can try is also if it is an accredited school that the Dept. of Education recognizes, you might be eligible for a Pell Grant, depending on what you income was on last year's taxes. Grants are money you do not have to repay. It won't pay for the whole school but usually helps with a decent chunk of it.

Have you tried Schneider? go to there Website. I do not think I can post it? but you can search for them, easy to find. Go to Jobs and enter your state. It will tell you what they are hireing for. You pay nothing for school upfront they take 12.50 out of your check every week. The kicker is that it is an 18 month contract but is protated. I f you leave you must pay them back at something like 180.00 a month. They have good training two weeks will send you on a bus they pay for BK and Lunch you must pay for dinner they recomend bringing 200.00 for this and misc expenses, you will then drive with a trainer for up to 2 weeks and you are paid like 70 a day or something then you are out on your own. You can be making money within a month of application if everything goes right.

Prime here in Springfield, MO has a decent looking training program that I am thinking about. Basically you run a truck with a trainer.

Also some areas The food, soda, and beer carriers will pay or supply the training for the right people. I know a couple of drivers that got their cdl from Anheiser-bush and Coke.

    Bayle,
I was going to sign up for Fafsa, but that too can take a few weeks to process. I feel like I've wasted a bunch of time, can't afford to wait longer.

Popeye, I was thinking about Schneider....wasn't sure abotu their training program if it was good or not. Always an option...will have to do some research, thanks for bringing them up.

Snorelord, hmm will check out prime too. Do the beverage distributors get their drivers a CDL-A? ...I guess it depends on the truck you drive for them.
