Al.har89...if you want to be a O/O someday and that is your goal don't let anyone discourage you. Do your research and run somebody elses tractor, I'd say for 5 years or more. Write down everything and keep receipts...basically run it like you own it.
And if a Cascadia is what you want then go get one when the time comes.panthernz Thanks this. -

Ok I guess I'd better own up and withdraw this statement. I've had 4 job offers this week and a phone interview that may lead to a 5th. And yes, all in Alberta.

Nothing personal.....but what I see immigrants build this country. They work for cheaper than canadians, just because canadians don't want to pay them a full wage, even when they are better educated with more experience, just simply because...you're new here and how it goes. Employers just take an advantage of them a BIG TIME.
They do not understand they rights, just because they are new here, they get abused a BIG TIME, they don't know what is legal and what is not.
Than talking about money....back home they were making less money, but living expences were not even close what they pay here, so they quickly realize they cannot afford for cheap, but is almost impossible to get raise, because you do not have a "canadian experience","seniority"and because you don't have a seniority you doing worst jobs ever what you, good paid seniority guys refuse to do, because you have an immigrant in company to do it for you.
So what are you blaming for? Somebody stealing your job? ########. This happens in offices, those bean-counters finding ways how to make another half a billion profit every year again and again.
I'm sorry to say that, but in some aspect Canada is a 3.world country, however it is still some how good country to live. -
I do have to agree with most seasoned drivers that I have spoken with as I too have the desire to be my own boss, that today's income as an o/o is dried up. When you look at the net net of your income after running your own rig you are bascially making the same money as a company driver. If I could buy a rig that didn't break down nor had tire wear and had amazing fuel mileage, I would do it in a heart beat. But the reality is they do break down and when your not rolling down the road your not making money and that can put you behind the 8 ball real fast. My old company is finding it cheaper now to lease tractors from Penske rather than buying their own fleet. They are already saving money and the year isn't even over. I would probably go that route because if the rig breaks down, Penkse or Ryder are responsible for the repairs, they get you a unit to finish your delivery and that means your still making money. This was a scenario at my last company and they shared with me what they would have spent and lost if they were using their own unit. I understand they have a better leasing power than I do but it could still save you alot of money in the long run. Pedigree Bulldog sounds like he has his head screwed on right so go with that advice if you really want to go o/o. If you don't have the capital in the bank to start as a o/o then lease from Penske or Ryder and bank those maintenance costs and then in time if you want finance your own rig. Good luck!
