When driving in ice/snow is it better to be in a lower gear to keep the RPM's up so you can throttle out of a slide or to be in a higher gear with lower RPMs'.
Example:10 speed truck. Road is snow covered and you can only do 45 mph. Would it be better to be in 9th at 1400 rpm or 10th at 1000.

I am probably wrong, but I would rather be in 10th at 1000 rpms to keep my drives from spinning to fast. I am comfortable with my reasoning though so someone more expierenced will be along shortly.

Well that's why I wanted to ask. If your to high a RPM your more likely to have wheel spin but to low and it bogs the truck down and it seems like I'm less in control if and when it does spin.

It depends on the situation. Are you going uphill? Down? Flat? Two lane 4 lane? Are you wearing red underwear with blue socks at the time? Lol. Really it depends on the situation. I'd run it in 9th depending on how the truck was set up. 10th at 45 you're just lugging the engine.

Find a good middle ground that you are comfortable with in your current conditions. Snow is much different than ice for example. Too high of rpms, no good......too low could get you in trouble as well.

Yeah it defiantly seems to be a case by case bases. Biggest area I've had problems is with a 2 lane state rd I run every night that drifts badly.

I always keep the RPM's low and keep the truck at a nice, steady even pace. The brakes arent your friends unless its your trolley for the trailer. Most people's first reaction in a situation (when its slick) is to slam the brakes. Its very hard to train yourself to NOT DO THIS but letting off the throttle easy or if needed pushing in the clutch are better alternatives. I found it better if the trailer wants to try and slide around ya to floor the throttle and grab the trolley which tries to slow down the trailer and speed the truck up in order to straighten it back up.
