Yes it was the unloader. Now it cut's out at 120 where it's suppose to Thank's for all the reply's. What an easy fix. Scraping off the old gasket on the plate is what took the longest.

We at KW use a new gov that is pre-set at 130psi. If you have a KW with the gov mounted on the drier, then yours is set at 130, non-adjustable. And about 65-75 bucks.

Hey, I have a somewhat similar question I would like to ask rather than start a new thread.
Same motor as Diesel Dave, I started it one morning and only built about 35 lbs. Replaced governor and all is good, I take off and when the governor kicks in I hear air pressure bypassing under the hood, sounds like the high pressure unloader popping off. I let off the throttle and it stops, get on it and it blows off again. Seems to be directly related to turbo pressure. When it does stop blowing off it builds air pressure normally, until air pressure drops and governor kicks in and it starts all over again.
Can someone give me a short explanation of this unloader valve? sounds like it may be my problem also. Thanks -
You're right on the money! Service the unloader.
truckbiz Thanks this. -
The unloader on a bendix 550 compressor sit's on top side of the compressor. You have to remove the braided air line. It has 5 bolts that holds down the unloader plate that looks like bat wings. Remove the plate, and the 2 plunger valves pop out with springs. Remove and clean everything and replace with new one's. Make sure you use the lube on the o-rings. Paid $15.00 for the kit.
