Conway and Suburban Driving School in MI

Ok well Iam about to make a pretty big decision I checked out Suburban Driving school in Romulus, MI and everything seems to be on the level. The big question is do I just pay money up front and get my Class A that way, or should I take there offer with Conway and be committed to them for 6 months?

I admit that committing to any company scares me, not that Iam a bad employee but more the fear that they will either want to work the hell out of you with little pay, or you get stuck with some jerk, maybe even both lol. Also I only came back to the Detroit area just to get my CDL then plan to move back up to northern Michigan to help out my grandparents and hopefully find a job up there.

So my real question is, if I get the class A how hard will it be to find a job on my own?

Some background: I currently have a Class B CDL /w Air Brakes I was a teamster driving stake trucks for 3 years (till they went under) then drove another stake truck with a moffet all last summer. I have a clean driving record, I don't do drugs, I don't really drink, and have never been fired from any job.

Please help with some input on either this school or which route I should take(no pun intended lol)

    Thank You,
    PureEvil

I saw your post in the other thread, Mr Pure Evil:yes2557:

Heres my advice......IF you have the money to reasonably get your CDL A on your own, do it! If theres any way you can avoid being tied down to a company because of a training agreement or whatever, do it!

The only thing is.....It is January.. The worst time to look for LTL (Less Than Truckload) jobs. If you get your CDL A now, with hazmat and doubles/triples, I bet you in March/April/May you could find an LTL job.

I just think you will put yourself in a much better position by not being obligated to a company for CDL training...This is the biggest scam going in the trucking business now.

So if you can find a temporary non driving, or possibly Class B job for now, get your CDL A on your own, with endorsements, do it! I havent heard great things about Conway Truckload! If you happen to get your CDL A on your own, start applying to the LTL companies I listed in the other thread in the spring time!

If you dont mind me asking, how old are you?

Iam 29, never been arrested, no drugs, no drinking, good driving record. I have thought about applying for some of the logging or gravel companies because in northern michigan they seem to have alot of that going on. Have you ever worked for anything like that, and would they take a rookie?

The only concern that keeps coming up is "will they hire some one who just got there class A"??? I have plenty of time on Class B trucks (stake trucks, boom trucks) and driving a hilo is no issue either, I have done that at almost every job lol.

My best advice to you as a 29 year old:

Wait until March/April, apply to every LTL company in Detroit as either a driver or a dockworker....Get hired, and if you are a dockworker, find out what the protocol is for becoming a driver. If it is a bid process, sign EVERY BID!!

Apply to UPS Freight in Detroit bro, I know people up there and can try to get you an interview when they are hiring (I had a Detroit bid for 2 years)

Problem is that I really don't want to be in the Detroit area, I want to be about 4 hours north of it. My grandparents live up there and really need the help these days. I know the city of Gaylord, MI has alot of stuff and could maybe look around there.

But you are confirming my suspensions about the conway thing. The school just pushes it to hard, and makes me think there is something they are not telling me.

I have heard all the stories about people gettting screwed in a lease, or working with a "Trainer" who just got his cdl last year or that they just use you as a cheap team driver. The "trainer" will sleep while you drive, and not show you anything.

I dont know that area. I havent been very far of Detroit. I would recommend researching the LTLs and other local companies in that area.

I dont know about you, but Id rather make $15/hr locally and be home every night, than making $400 a week and living on the road.

Conway truck load is a good company and have a great training system, they just need dependable drivers. I would assume that jobs are hard to come by in your area?, and trucking companies loving hiring drivers from economically challenged or rural areas where the options are few, as it keeps drivers loyal to them.......as this the life of an OTR driver is a tough life.......and many people just give up and go home if they have other options waiting. If your commited you will do well at Conway, which is true of any trucking compnay.
