Hopefully we don't get thrown under the bus for this thread. :biggrin_25519:

BUT, we haven't really seen a post that answers concerns that are specific to our situation (and we have sifted through ALOT of posts on here, so we aren't just lazy).

So, first off, we are totally newbies. We are planning on attending Katlaw trucking school in Austell, Georgia in March, and being ready to sign on with a company the beginning of April. We have heard tons of good things about Katlaw, and so far it seems to be our best option.

There are a couple of concerns we have about companies though. We have gone through Katlaw's list of companies, and only four of them seem like companies that fit our needs. We would really like to be able to apply to as many companies as possible so that we (pending us both completing our CDLs, of course) are guaranteed a job with someone, somewhere.

Our concerns/what we need in a company:

    1) Obviously, we need a company that takes on team drivers fresh out of school.
    2) We also are both 21, so we can't go with a company like WEL, McElroy, or TMC (according to their websites).
    3) Our main concern is that we are able to stay in the same truck throughout the companies extra training. We are NOT up for being separated and OTR with different trainers, in different trucks. Don't judge, it just doesn't sit well with us for personal reasons.
    4) This is not really important to our choosing a company, but those that allow small pets would be nice. That way mom-in-law doesn't have to keep the little guy for us.

    Companies we are considering:
    1) Watkins & Shephard- they seem to be perfect for us, but we are very skeptical about perfection, we know it doesn't exist. (Do they pay you for the 10 day orientation?)
    2) Schneider-they seem to have more negativity surrounding them than W/S but overall they seem to be a decent company to work for.
3)CRST-We're told they do team driving but I haven't read much about them, any comments?
4)Swift-We hear alot of crap about swift, but if it comes down to it, they are on the list.
    5) CR England- By far the company we have read/heard the most negative comments about. But most of them seem to be from solo drivers, do they treat teams any differently?
    6) Covenant Transport- We thought this was the "it" company for us at first, but now we aren't so sure. We've heard they are unsafe. Can someone with work experience from this company chime in on the conversation?

If you can think of any other companies that meet our needs, we would seriously appreciate the feedback.

IF we have missed an answer to our questions somewhere else, we will be happy to delete this thread and we apologize for wasting your forum space. So please, be nice to the n00bs. :biggrin_25514:

If you both stay in the same truck the whole time with neither of you having experience who is going to train y'all? You can't exactly train each other with no experience right?

I have read something about CRST having a train your partner type program, but I think they require one of the drivers to be with them for a certain period of time. I could be wrong though so I would check on the CRST section here or call them.

Have y'all contacted recruiters at each of the respective companies you listed? I would do that for sure. The only thing you listed that may be a problem is finding a company that will put the keys to one of their trucks in the hands of two drivers with zero experience.

    Keep at it! Good luck!

Yea I think it is going to really tough to find a company that will let you come right out of school and start teaming. I have read a few posts where the husband or wife goes out first and gets the training needed to be comfortable on the road. Then the spouse can join .

If you think that coming right out of school and you guy's will be ready to handle all that is thrown at you, It will be a recipe for a short career. One of you needs to go out with a good trainer. Watch and listen and ask lots of questions so when you guys do team up you will have at least a slight idea what trucking is all about.

    Now on the choices 2-6.....
All I have to say is do some reading here. You are going to have to pay your dues so it will probably be company 2-6, but I would try to go anywhere else I could if possible. Good Luck on your new career and keep us posted. We always like to hear good endings!

Gearjammers, Covenant Transport will train you and your husband at the same time. It's about a 40-45 day process in the trainer truck, then you can begin your career running together. I'm quite familiar with the safety concerns you have as well. I know the Unsafe Driving CSA score has come down from 81 to 61 in 7 months. That is our only basic score out of compliance as the threshold is 60. We will get to that number and even below it soon our safety department tells us. I can tell you that you will read negative comments about most carriers. The best advice any veteran driver can give new folks is make your own decisions about a company. Try not to be influenced by others before you've tried it. Good luck.

Check into US Xpress. I know they take recent graduates and the minimum age is 21.

As for training you may as well forget about training together in the same truck. The best you can hope for is to be paired up by gender and hope you both get decent trainers. No 2 drivers are the same and the that goes for trainers as well. Learn as much as you can and then pair up after your training in complete. You will both have been exposed to different situations and will be better informed.

Gearjammers, I suggest anything a recruiter tells you to get it in writing.. especially considering your unique situation. I was told by Werner that I could get a dedicated route but when I asked for it in writing I was told they can't do that (needless to say I scratched them off my list). Soooo... kindly request the important stuff in writing. I wish you both luck!

The only company half way decent on your list is Schneider, with that being said I don't know of any company that will put 2 untrained people in the same truck. You will each be teamed with someone til trained then put together.
