I had sent in an application to Star Transportation out of Nashville on a whim. I have actually narrowed it down to two other companies and I am finishing up some paper work. I never heard anything back from Star and called them about a week ago and was informed that they where processing my application. Since the other two companies had requested my unemployment settlements for the last 12 months for the DOT requirement of verifying where you have been, I called Star to see if they wanted a copy also. I was informed today that they had denied my application because I have been unemployed for too long. I don’t know much about them and probably wouldn’t have gone to work for them anyway but still it is kind of crappy to be denied work because you are out of work. Anyone having similar problems with other companies?

I don't think so. I just have to pick up some documentation concerning an unemployment gap and I should be ready to roll to McElroy or Roehl. Star had an ad on Craigslist and I filled out an online application on a whim. Again I know nothing about Star and as it appears probably will not and I am not bad mouthing them. I just thought it to be strange that they have a time limit on how long a student driver can be unemployed, especially if you can provide state documentation and school time during your unemployment gap.

I bet it don't have anything to do with the "gap" in employment, but collecting unemployment checks.

Seems like there is a widespread revolt by employers in general, against those they think were "milking" the system. Reading about this in the news a lot now, and in most industries.

It's happening more then just the trucking industry. People who has been unemployed for long periods of time (a year for example) are finding it difficult to find work again.
I have been unemployed 2 times in the past 3 years(by choice) and wasn't out of work for no more then 3 months. I really didn't consider it being unemployed but an extended vacation. But in my 47 years, I never collected a dime of unemployment which I had plenty of opportunities to do so. It's easy to just to stay out of work for a long time while the unemployment checks are rolling in, but it hurts future opportunities for employment in the long run.

If it is your choice to be unemployed then you don't qualify for unemployment.

So you are saying that you where kicked to the curb through no fault of your own. And they tried to hand you some greenbacks to soften the blow and you said, no thank you? I don't like money:biggrin_25524: Well ain't that special.

Unfortunately when the unemployment are about a ¼ less than what you used to make it is very frustrating to anyone collecting unemployment not to have a real job. Just remember all the years that you work you and your employers are contributing to unemployment whether you need it or not. I think a lot of people who where in the construction trade considered it a little vacation time between jobs / contracts and never signed up for unemployment. But when your field completely vanishes then it's another story. Our country is in bad shape and a lot of people are out of jobs. We are facing a problem with companies overlooking qualified candidates because they have been unemployed. The only answer is to make our country a leader again. Truckers should be carry goods from American manufacturing plants and not from shipping ports.

Companies are looking for compliant, fearful & conforming wage units. Extended unemployment is a red flag of nonconformity and maladjustment. Extended time at a school (to rake in an extra degree) raises the same red flag of potential noncompliance. A good wage slave doesn't take much time off the rat race for any reason. If you indicate that you had too much time on your hands (voluntarily or not) that shows that your priorities might have been compromised.

In my experience, the surest and fastest way to lose a job (never get one) is to show any, ANY sign of nonconformity to the high corporate expectations (even the most innocent and unrelated to a job). Humans don't just breed cattle and dogs. Generic, uniform wage units flooding highways every morning are the products of many, many generations of the artificial selection for docility and compliance.

Problem is companies are being picky and with people being unemployed and falling for that "Make $54,000.00 Your First Year" sales pitch companies can get over 100+ apps per day,so figure 5 business days a week that's 500+ apps a week.
