Are there any? I could care less about CA, so perhaps an option would be to find a used APU off an older or wrecked truck and just transfer it to mine?
Or is the concept of an inexpensive APU just wishful thinking? The things seem awfully overpriced for just a small diesel engine with a generator attached.
APU options that won't break the bank

Plenty of used APU's on eBay and Craigslist. ThermoKing dealer in Joplin Mo. generally has a couple of used units for sale.
Search the board on this subject. Youll find a couple of threads with guys rigging up their own homemade units. -
I think they are all way overpriced. Also seems like once they get a little age to them they become a maintenance headache.

I think this is best bet!! http://www.truckgenerators.com/
$2K air cooled diesel ... add your own heat and A/C -
A rooftop RV AC unit with a portable generator works pretty well and will not break the bank. Roughly half the weight of a full blown APU as well. Fuel no problem for it. You can legally carry extra gasoline or propane to run the generator. There are custom made boxes for various generators as well you could mount on catwalk or frame rail. Throw in an Espar heater for the cold times and you are set.

I'd rather not deal with extra types of fuel, so I'd prefer something that can run on diesel. And the appeal of traditional APUs, of course, is that they hide away neatly in a frame-mounted box, which looks a lot better on the truck.
But I guess it's a case of "you get what you pay for". -
We did generator. APU would be nice but it just didn't make economical sense

thats what i'm doing, roof top a/c honda gen. with remote start. gas- not a problem. i carry gas for my pony motor on my lowboy.

That is my issue. A full blown APU is just not cost effective for me. The amount of time I use the thing would extend the ROI on it to longer than the life of the truck. But then, my operation is primarily in the upper midwest, so AC is not as big of an issue as those that run down south. An Espar heater does a great job. Something like a rooftop AC (especially for those with mid roof style sleepers) is a more cost effective option. For those that want a box to put the portable generator in, this place has some custom made boxes.....

These guys also offer some of the name brand generators they sell with multi fuel options. You could use gasoline, propane, NG. -
doesn't really matter what you get. the way states are going. you won't even be able to run an apu before too long.
i've talked to 2 guys that got tickets in new york for running there apu.
most states don't even allow car idle. why would they allow apu idle?
my truck has some type of furnace for heat in the winter. no need for engine idle. it's made by espar. come summer time, i think i'll install extra batteries for a small window mount type a/c.
