:biggrin_25520:Trying to find out if all you good people had a choice of food at the truck stops: would you prefer a good greasy cheeseburger & all that goes with it, or a choice of prepackaged healthier food such as fruit, salads or smoothies (I know, I know!), which would you choose?
Also, how about prepared healthy snacks that you could eat on the road? Say for example, whole wheat crackers & low fat cheese, fruits, etc.

Any suggestions on what could be done to help you with a healthier life style?
Thanks for your ideas & inputs!
    Missy

I try to eat healthy....my version, not the medical fields.

Occasionally, I get that craving for a greasy burger. I eat it too :)

Most times, I do the Subway thing. Or if time allows, I do a sit down and have a good meal...veggies and meat :)

I snack on corn chips or nuts. I occasionally buy a bag of Chex party mix. OH! and about once every week or so....I eat a couple of chocolate bars for my monkey that rides on my back ;) He gets cranky if I don't.:biggrin_25520:

Well, I was only on the road for two weeks, but I prefered cheap and fast. A couple of hot dogs from the TA usually did the job, and I could eat them and drive.

But if I had a choice, it would be steak on a grill at a truck/rest stop, but my first trainer had no fridge, and the seconds fridge I swear was going to short out. Plus the whole $350/wk salary really does not buy you steaks everyday.

I have a cooler in my truck, and I carry some healthy stuff in it : carrot sticks, low fat ranch dressing, V8, chesse sticks, milk, Jelly and usually a few Starbucks or Rockstars. Along with that I carry cold cereal (sugary and healthy), bread, beef jerky, and usually some nuts and fresh fruit.
I will mostly eat my stuff and usually stop just once a day for a hot meal, when I do it's whatever I'm in the mood for: sometimes a nice greasy burger (Hardees/Carl's Jr rules) or maybe something decent while sitting down.

    Hi missy,
we would definetly prefer to eat in our truck lol. Honestly between those choicees it would be best . You asked about healthy snack choices. I can tell you what my husband and i use for snacks. Mind you we both had the gastric bypass so our eating basically has to be healthier.
    Here are some ideas for you;
    beef jerky (good protein)
raisens (for when we want something sweet)
    sunflower seeds
soy nuts (good and filling , honest)
    cheese and low fat crackers
plain rice cake with peanut butter and sometimes low sugar jelly on it
    low salt pretzels
    baked chips once in awhile
    string cheese
those are only a few of the items.. was trying to remember lol i am home right now so had to think

I work for a company that pays for my meals, and expenses, so I could eat about what I want. Cost isn't really an issue as long as I don't over indulge.

I use an electric cooler to keep stuff like cold water, milk, cottage cheese, regular cheddar cheese, cold cut meats, mayonnaise, mustard, pudding, and my favorite, white seedless grapes.

I also carry fruits, like bananas, apples, and pears. Nothing better than a peanut butter, mayo, and banana sandwich on whole wheat bread, washed down with a pint of fresh chocolate milk for a quick meal.

I keep lots of nuts, crackers, and canned food as well. I'd just as soon eat a can of select sardines than have a steak sometimes.

The boss keeps me stocked up by paying my "truck" grocery bill once a week. Once a day, I'll let him treat me to a sit down meal, usually breakfast.

I got real tired of baloney/ham and or peanut butter sandwiches a long time ago. Best investment I ever made was buying one of those expensive 12 volt fridges (pricey at $500, but worth it) when I was by the Iowa 80. It will freeze food and keep it frozen as long as I want.
My wife cooks great food that I can freeze (her spaghetti is just short of a miracle), I use my Burton stove to heat it and have a nice "home cooked" meal.

In between I do the Subway/Hardees dance. And when I can get it POPEYES CHICKEN! I keep a package of Hebrew National hotdogs, the best made hands down.
If I run out of the wifes fixin's, I go by wallyworld and get some cans of ravioli or beefaroni to keep body and soul together.

The food at the TA's/Petro's/Flying J's is so generic it hurts. The Sapp Bro's seem to have subbed out the kitchen duties to various restaurant companies. I have eaten at and enjoyed meals at the Sapp Bro's in Clearfield, PA and Cheyenne, WY.

I wanna die healthy so I eat a lot of lean meat, broiled chicken, salad, fruit and nuts. I eat at a steak house once a week and Ryans quite a bit as they welcome you and are quite healthy.
