Well when you compare it to a van job of course it's better, in the words of my trainer "Any ruhtard can pull a box." It must depend on location, here in the Northwest, I make more money hauling food grade than what some of the HazMat gig's are offering...But, even if it were a dollar or two more, would it be worth all the extra hassle?

I'm not gonna lie, I've thought about the gas hauling thing. But the whole starting over at another company thing, being the new guy all over again, I dunno. I really do like tankers and being part of the elite...And I'm happy where I'm at. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Maybe one day.

Coastal Transport did that in the late 70's, early 80's. Hauling stuff at "backhaul" rates. By 1985 they were broke and wound up as a lease operator at Chemical Leaman.

i was trying to find a pic to post of coastal tank lines; couldn't
find one anywhere. i believe they had a fair amount of "White" trucks,
    silver/gray paint with a big yellow "C" . akron,oh. if i remember right.

i was in charleston, wv one time and a driver from there told me "there isn't but three carriers in the valley, chemical leaman, coastal tank lines and ford tank lines."

Coastal was out of Akron. If you were ever in the Dow Chemical plant in Midland Michigan, they used Coastal trucks in the safety film you had to watch to get carded there. We used the Ford tank wash in Coal Grove Oh a lot. We would wash out there and then go over to Haverhill to load Methanol for Dupont in Memphis. When Coastal went broke they became Nuco, a lease operator for Chemical Leaman. The son of Coastal's owner was my dispatcher for years in Columbus.

i recall only being at Dow Midland one time, i went several times to bay city, mi. to a plastic pipe plant with the ethylene trailer. i was in memphis some, but not dupont.

i remember nuco 555. i had read in a magazine article, that it was the large increased insurance costs that suddenly put coastal out of business. apparently it happened quickly, so chemical leaman leased them for the first 9 months, until they could do the buyout.

how many drivers were in columbus?

wow, interesting; reality check for the owners son?
