Hello,
My husband and I have been researching and following this forum for the past 2 years. After much thought and prayer, we will finally be starting CDL school in late March. We will be attending our local vo-tech, that way we will not "owe" a company.
We have a few questions and are hoping to find the answers here. 1) How soon after starting school, should we start applying to companies for pre-hires? We know that pre-hires are not guarantees of employment, but we think that would give us a feel of what companies would consider hiring us on as a team. 2) Which companies would offer us the best miles and pay? We have no issue with running hard, we prefer it. Our only hope is to make it home every 4-5 weeks as we have kids and grandkids we want to see and check on.
3) As a husband/wife team, are there any companies that may have "dedicated" runs available to us after we "pay our dues"? We understand that we are at the bottom of the totem pole and OTR is where we will start, but we are hoping to find a dedicated run after a couple years, and at least get to swing by the house if only for a reset.
Any and all comments are appreciated and thank you in advance for all your help!!

Welcom aboard Casino Gal, some companies will hire you on for a dedicated account immediately. Pre-hires can be had about 1/2 way thru school. Recruiters will be at the school quite often, selling you their schpeel. Browse this forum often for additional info. Getting home monthly should be no big deal. You want to live close to a terminal or truck lanes. Where do you live ?
CasinoGal Thanks this. -
Take a good look into Con-way Truckload. Spousal teams are in demand but you and your spouse will likely go out with separate trainers. Sometimes one spouse trains the other if one starts the career in advance of the other.

Thanks for the replies. We live in WV, right off of I-81, 30 minutes from I-70/I-68 and maybe a hour from I-95, close to lots of highways! And yes, we have been reading about Conway and have them on our short list. Thanks again for the replies!

Good luck to you!
I know you said you have thought, prayed, and researched, but on the offchance this has not been considered...(and if it has, consider it again!)
I have no idea how couples do it...remember, when you argue (and don't tell me you don't) it's hard to zip a curtain angrily to emphasize your point! And you can't get away from them...EVER!
I love my wife more than anything, and miss her terribly, but that whole 'til death do us part' clause would be invoked very soon, if we rode team
When I went to school, we had 25 students (and 6 instructors, VERY hands-on, one-on-one school) 4 of them women, 3 of those were 'better halves' training with their male counterparts. We had only 4 people fail, 3 of them were the 'better halves' and boy...did the sparks fly in the classroom! I hope you have taken all this into consideration.
Personally, I would send him first, and let him get 6 months OTR, to make sure it is right for you, and that way, he may he able to be your trainer when/if you two decide it is right for you. (Or vice versa, whichever of you two would be more confortable as the test mule)
Please do not take this as a sexist post, just a firsthand observation from school.
I think the raltionship issue isn't taken into consideration nearly enough. If you think being an away-from-the-family-trucker-husband/wife is difficult, try being a stuck-together-24/7-with-constant-stress-trucker-husband/wife!CasinoGal Thanks this. -
JustaWheel, to answer your question, we have considered this very thing and we know that there will be good and bad days together. But, after 25 years of marriage, we think we can get through it. I also thought of sending him first, so that he could train me, but I think, for me, I would rather be trained by someone else. No offense to my Hubby, but it just seems that if we both come into driving with different perspectives, it would be better all around. Thanks for taking time to reply!!

Hey CasinoGal!! I was wondering how things are progressing with you and your husband.
Did you decide to train together or separately? Just wanted to follow up with you.
