First of all, I've never drove a tractor trailer. Unfortunately, I have a horrible driving record. When I was younger I didn't care about anything. My driving record was the last thing I worried about. Now that I'm older, I care about everything and want to go truckin'.
1985 failure to wear helmet & No motorcycle qualification
1985 no driver license
1987 careless & imprudent
1990 failure to yeild right of way, stop sign, no driver license, careless & imprudent, drive while suspended
1991 drive while suspended, point revocation
2000 speeding 50 in a 35
2004 speeding 75 in a 64
Well, let me have it. I know it's hard to believe, but NO tickets since Jan. 26, 2004. I know it's bad. BUT, what are my chances of being employed by a trucking company? Most applications I've seen don't have enough room to put my rediculously absurd amount of driving offenses.

If only Life worked in reverse, right? When you need common sense you're not old enough to have any..
Here's my best advice, but it comes with a warning- your state may- or probably does, do things differently than mine, so this might not have any value.
You need a GOOD Legal Professional to go over this. He might be able to fully or partially clean up that record. ( Offences that occurred while you were a minor for example ). He may- or may not be able to write, or petition the Governor, or the state DMV asking to modify or remove some of the information. Sometimes, if you beg enough and really lick their boots they will give some consideration. The good news is that you didn't have a Commercial Driver's License when you got tagged for those.
Here's a good place to start asking..http://www.handelonthelaw.com/home/
Don't feel too bad about your driving record by-the-way, I worked (a lOOOoong time ago) on my local Police Dept with a Senior Patrolman who had a work permit because his D.L. was taken away "FOR LIFE". He WAS the world's worst driver. He knew the top speed of every patrol car by it's number. And he tested his car every night- "Just in case you know". For years the city's traffic circle always had black tracks around it where someone was doing power slides around it for fun. When I started working I learned that for years this guy had been doing it.
Well, long story short- if you can't work in trucking, don't worry- you can always get a job as a City Police Officer.Last edited: Jan 28, 2012
jbatmick Thanks this. -
The few apps I've looked at ask how many moving violations you have had in the past 3-5 years.
That said I hope you have cleaned up your act and have learned to respect the fact that you are sharing the road with innocent people if you are considering a career in driving. -
I know this will be hard to believe, but I've had 1 ticket in 31 years of driving, and that was in my car about 15 years ago. Anyway, get a traffic lawyer who can work on having some of this removed from your record. Good luck, and congrats on the clean record the last 8 years. -
JOMO2NC,
Have you obtained a DMV printout to see what is actually still on your record?
I'd do that before spending any money on a lawyer.Gizmo_Man Thanks this. -
Get your record from your state to see what's on there first... that's what I did, just to be sure. Mine was clean, as it should be... but I wanted to be absolutely sure before I blew money on school..

You shouldnt have any problems. I had a BUNCH of speeding tickets in my late teens and early twenties. My record has been clean for the last 6 years and i had multiple offers when i got out of school.

Thank you for replying. I do have a current copy of my MVR. All of the tickets are on there. The Missouri and North Carolina DMV told me that everything stays on the MVR forever. I've heard a lot of people say after 3, 5, or 7 years the tickets come off the MVR. Is this true, or do companies just not look that far back? Unfortunately, the two states I've lived in don't function that way.
I've lived and learned. I should've protected my driving record. So, now I'll have to pay the price!
I've looked at several applications and the companies I've considered ask, "Have you EVER been charged with suspended, revoked or careless and wreckless". -
Since all of these were "so long ago", you "might be" cut some slack.
So, to answer your question, "will anyone hire you"?? I say yes. BUT be the BEST student you can be, get GREAT grades in school, keep your nose CLEAN from now on. If you get one, just one ticket from now (and even if while attending school??), you're toast.
