I just joined the forum. I have a little over 3 years driving experience but I have been away from driving due to an injury for the last 13 months. I am talking to a Shaffer recruiter to see about going out with a driver trainer and how long and all that. I will be out of the northeast, but I only want to drive national. Most of my driving experience has been in the northeast so far and I was getting burnt out before my time off and I don't want to do that again. So anyway that's my story in a nutshell. Hope to participate in some good trucking conversation here in the future. :)

Every year that goes by, it seems the "national" freight becomes less and less. Most are migrating to a "regional" model because most drivers are willing to forego some wages for more home-time ... especially the dry freight business.

Not sure what Schaffer's freight model looks like, but at least this is refrigerated, and refrigerated is going to be your best bet if you want to run "national". Any meat hauler (Prime, Helwig, JBS, TransAm, etc) will keep you moving around pretty good and obviously getting back to CT is easy enough. You could almost run dedicated NJ to OK/KS/TX and back to NJ/CT/MA if you wanted.

Hi STexan..that would be an awesome run. I don't mind being in the NE some of the time but I would like to get out further west every once in awhile too.

I see you're from Dallas? I was born and raised in S. Texas. I would love to drive and live out in West Texas somewhere between El Paso and San Angelo but looks like there is a housing shortage out there and I don't know if they would hire a "yankee". :biggrin_2559:

Oh and by the way I'm thinking I will stay out around 30 days or so. I don't really have any obligations anymore so I'm free and clear to stay out as long as I want.

I was with Helwig (still am sort of) out of Terrell and they [typically] backhauled off the East coast for Dollar General and Family Dollar in Odessa and Duncan to get them near Plainview, Friona and Dodge City meat plants. Any meat hauler such as them will do essentially the same thing. Having the preference to stay out 3+ weeks will be a definite selling point to any carrier and will allow you to do the west coast when the mood strikes you.

If you can/will flatbed, Roehl and TMC might be worth considering to get pipe loads into the San Angelo/El Paso region while running nationally, too. (Roehl is expanding westward and recently opened a PHX terminal)

Thanks for the info! If I can't get on with Shaffer I think I'm going to drive down to the San Angelo or Odessa/Midland area and rent a room and see about getting a job hauling oil or water or something like that. They seem to pay a really good wage. I bet there's alot of guys applying too though. I talked to one outfit down there south of San Angelo and he said they already had 70+ applicants for the 15 openings that they had. I changed my mind about going down there after that because there's also a housing shortage. I still might do it though. :)
