Hi all,
Just graduated from my CDL school, got my license and can nail the parallel parking every time. Here is what I need to know.
Like I said, I can hit the parallel parking but I've been doing it all along with a 28 foot trailer. I'm heading to training with my company and am sure I'll be tested on the parallel park with a 53' trailer.
what is the best way to setup for the maneuver with a 53 footer?
any links to diagrams etc is appreciated.
thx.

Never had to park parallel with any company yet.

I haven't much either myself. Just in a few tight packed rest areas. Never with shipping/receiving though.

I often have to parallel park as its the only kerb parking available for me to park the tractor/trailer and walk into the shipper/receiver to find out where they need me to be.
Usually I back the trailer into the space until the tires are close to the kerb. Then, if there is space behind the trailer, I will let the truck follow the trailer in, if not, I will pull ahead and correct.
Basically, I would imagine that its the same as a 28', just larger. However, I have always found it easier to do things with a 53' than the smaller trailers.
Good luck! -
Can't remember the last time I ever had to park like that...i am always looking for the easy parking.

916, any parking you do with a 53 will be twice as easy than a 28 footer. I kinda doubt you will even be tested on parking like that hiring on with a new company unless they have lots of accounts where its strictly parallel

I wonder why DMV even tests on it but I guess it's good to know in the event you ever have to do it.
Our school taught us a weird way of doing it with a 28'er. But you're right I'll probably not have to do it for my employer...probably just an alley dock type of back up. I've been backing with a 28' travel trailer for years and it really helped me a lot in school. Personally I think the longer it is the easier it is....
thanks again everyone!
