As I write this I'm sitting at crst computer terminal. Maybe I set my expectations to high or maybe not. I came to Cedar Rapids from South Bend Indiana on the 14th of January not to long of a ride not bad. I had read a lot about the "dorms" and its true, but its not that bad. So far stay has been ok except for some snoring and bed bugs. The black lady at the front desk lied and said they one of us bought them. I could never find a place to put my food in fridge so I kept my food in my room in the tote they gave me and some I took to kirkwood. Speaking of kirkwood... they are the most unprofessional pos I have ever had the misfortune of meeting. I had my out of state permit before I came (thank god), but you mean to tell me that after getting your permit for Iowa you have to sit and wait to Monday. WTF, my roommate is doing absouletly nothing. They should go to Kirkwood to at least learn straight line backing. Next the rotten instructor gave me 45 mins of drive time my first day I'm struggling driving now. That really es me off, he gave one guy more drive time then me and another guy. The other guy thought he was racist(not the case) but I think he just felt more comfortable letting this guy drive cause he drove for the army. Now my instructors never even really trained me most of what I learned came from other students who drove before or had their cdls. The instructors do really rush you will not talk to you and will head to that tiny office they have. I only really had one good instructor and that was Bruce. I then go on and fail my skills twice and then the third time passed and have not driven since. I really thought I would get a lot more drive time then I did. I can get the instructors from point a-b safely but I would not feel comfortable over the road by myself especially downshifting. Thats the whole point of driving isn't it. Now tell me why on day I had to look at maps for 7 hours it should not take 7 hours to do two "exercises". Then kirk wood treats you like crap. Because you are just a property of CRST. "Oh, CRST will hunt you down if you don't come here first". I have probably gotten in total about 10 hours of drvinging time would you feel safe with me behind the wheel. I wouldn't They have an advanced course which is 4 weeks I think we should get the extra week to practice not reading maps, if we didn't pass the road test. I also think that even four weeks is not enough time especally for a community college. Anyways that's my rant I know some people are going to get on here and say I didn't "try" hard enough. I will say how can I try when I cannot even practice with the trucks why not recycle some students who can at least pass their skills. Im just so disappointed with the school.

Sounds like a snafu alright. I start at a different school next week. I pray the horrors are not as rough there, however from what I understand most schools don't really have the time or man power (trainers) to get you up and running behind the wheel. It should be our first few weeks with a our first company, and their on the job training that we really learn to drive from.

I will be blogging about my experiences at cdl school, as well as the on the job training afterwards. I invite anyone who would like to check it out at From Training to Truck Driving.

Bigwuz, I am sorry to hear about your experience. I hope things work out for you. I also hope you will stay in these forums to help others with their decisions. We are having a discussion in another thread about the difference between the 3 week course, and a 20 week course. I think you have some valuable input as to the key difference. The thread is about NETTTS. Look for it, and give some input. Once again, I hope things turn around for you. Good Luck.

Crst feels the class is only to get you your lic, they put you in a truck for 28 days with a trainer to get you real driving training. That way you make them money sooner, its not right but all the mills do it that way, hang in there, it gets well it gets

Hell no its not right if you don't have your permit the first couple days is spent doing that. If you get your permit Tuesday you spend 3 days doing nothing. I went to a CDL school at home in Indiana and at least you got to drive the first day you got your license. Here I my roommates waited for days and a lot it seems can't pass airbrakes or combo. I just got hired in and spent my last 50 dollars on my license. I am grate full to have my license but I'm mad at kirkwood training and treatment here at the facility. I hope that the training I get on my 28 days is sufficient.

Sounds pretty bad. Hopefully you get more wheel time than you know what to do with and a good trainer that is interested in helping you build your skills during your 28 days bro.
