For what it is worth I used a Garmin Nuvi 255W for several years and had no problems at all, used the atlas to check for low clearence locations and restricted routes, but overall it worked great. When Garmin released the new Dezel unit, I decided to step up and get one. I have used the RM 700 and read the horror stories about the problems with the RM 710, so I figured I would stick with Garmin. It has worked well and you can change the configuration to meet your needs. With the recent price drops, it is a pretty good bargin too. Just my two cents...

GPS's can be good for locating street names in places where street signs are so small and at night when it's hard to see things, but like others say though, don't always trust a GPS. Use your own judgment for narrow/dead end streets, low clearances, etc.

I've been the Rand McNally 5" unit for about 2 months now and I absolutely LOVE it. While it's not 100% infallible, it does make the job a lot less stressful. One of the things that is very useful is the search function for scales, weigh stations, truck stops, etc. I use that on every trip and it's great.
After using mine for a couple months, I can say that I don't ever want to be without one. About the only thing I would change is that next time I'd go with the 7" model since it's easier to see.
All the old timers will tell you that "you don't need anything other than a map", but why not make use of technology if you can? I use the atlas too, but it doesn't tell me everything as quickly as the GPS can - especially while I'm driving.
Get a Rand McNally. You won't be disappointed. I know I haven't been.FlatbedTexan Thanks this. -
I got the RM 510 just because its from the people who make the maps we read, yes it does make mistakes from time to time and it doesnt always rt the same as roehl but if you put your fuel stop in it will re-route then its bout 99% same as Roehl, and if the 510 route looks better call Jim in F&R and he will still tell you to go his way lmao....sorry Jim ..really you n Jolene are always helpful
jeepnut_nh and FlatbedTexan Thank this. -
I bought a reman RM 500., great unit with a couple small issues, whenever this dies I will replace it with a new 510 with lifetime maps,

i have a PC miler truck unit that's so old that the technical people laugh at me when i tell them what i'm using. the sound comes and goes now and the screen is so faded it's hard to see in daylight. but it works reliably and i can update the database off the internet for free whenever i feel like it. when i trade it in the company will buy it back for $50 credit towards a new one.
i also use a garmin car GPS to supplement it, because neither the PC miler nor the garmin can identify all the addresses that i'm sent to, but one or the other generally gets it right. using two of them also means that i have one set for 3D view, and another next to it that i have set for map view, with north at the top.
i don't trust either one to keep me out of trouble, but being able to call up a street map for any city in the US or canada makes them worthwhile. in my opinion, any GPS is better than no GPS, but the PC miler is spectacular for trip planning, and the garmin can't do that at all. -
are the gps that is in those truck stop's worth the money ?? the big 7 in,, screen ??

I just replaced my old RouteFinder GPS from Kenworth with a new Cobra 5550. So far loving the new Cobra. But always still check my Rand McNally Motor Carrier Atlas. For the most part its been about 98% the same as the Fuel/Routing sent to QC.
