I see that you guys hit your tires to see if they have air, how often do you actually check each tire with a gauge to see the actual pressure?
Thanks.

I can't answer for anyone else but I checked mine every morning with a guage.Of course I payed for my own tires, not like company drivers.
-
I thump them twice a day, sometimes more, and check them with a gauge every other day. More if one sounds low.
I also have an airline in the side box. -
I always check with a gauge when I get another trailer.
During the trip I generally just use a tire thumper before I leave from a parking area.
That's also a good time to check your fifth wheel lock as well.
There's times that I check the same trailer with a gauge partway along the trip if I know I'm going to be running continuously on hot roads at higher speeds.
If I'm under a hazmat load, I'll make a point of checking with a gauge at least a couple times between start & end. -
This may not be the best thing, but I only check mine with a gauge when I notice a different sound when thumping, or if it looks low. I don't ever haul hazmat, though.

WoW!
You've got it made in the shade!
I used to wish I had a rail road or bus company in my side box, but, MaN!
An AIRLINE?
Waayyy cool!

I do about the same as you. We switch trailers sometimes 5 to 10 times a day. If the trailer is one of our "owned " trailers it is equipped with Flo-thru valve caps & I WILL check these with a gauge: as I do not have to remove the valve caps. The Flo-thrus SAVE alot of time .
NOW FOR A COMPLAINT........
I despise drivers who P inside the trailer wheels !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a NASTY & UNSAFE habit that is EASILY avoided. How can you expect anyone to check air pressure when there is urine in the wheels.
I WILL NOT CHECK ANY TIRE (w/ a gauge) THAT IS FILLED WITH URINE IN THE WHEEL !@!!!!!!! -
Thank you everyone. I would not check a pee tire either. lol...

In l the years I have spent driving, its is a very rare occassion to see a driver actually check the air pressure with a gauge. I pull the same set all the time. I park Tractor and Trailers here at my house now. Sundays I wash them, adjust brakes and check air pressure in the tires.
On pretrips I check fluid levels and belts, and thump the tires. I visually check the tires several times a day, and if a tire is even a little low you can tell by the coloration or heat of the tread.
Normally Im right at or very close to 80,000. Powder truck are generally loaded on a scale, and most plant try to gross out the load.
I dont have any problems keeping my tire pressure between 105 and 110 psi cold. I never take air pressure reading on a hot tire. Thumping is best when hot. -
I was just going to ask if anyone uses those! I would love to have them but didn't really know how reliable they were.
