Well mine was sand stone mountain in wv not the biggest but I was headed south I was only loaded with 5000lbs and it was a bad snow storm coming up the mountain was clear roads so I decided to keep rolling pulled over at that mandatory brake test area got a red bull out of my fridge and away I went soon as I crossed the top of the hill I could see the plows had not hit yet I was going slow but I was making hard and it broke my drive tires loose scared me but I gave it some gas and got traction again and slowly brought my truck down to about 15 to finish the mountain

I never really got scared of a pass when I started. You can bet my trainer was probably annoyed by the amount of questions I asked in regard to them though as we came on each one in the first week. If there was one thing I was certain of it was that I was going to have as much information as possible about what to do before I got to it.

I think what helped me was before I got my license I rode with my friend. We came down into Laughlin and I remember seeing all the crosses on the side of the road. It made me realize you have to respect those hills and that it was the last place to get in a hurry. It's better to be safe and slow and never put yourself in a situation that is scary rather than on the other side of a mountain.

My first pass was Cabbage with a trainer. He had me all nervous about it too. He had told me to go down it in 7th. He was worried there might be some ice. He also told me to wake him up when we got there but I was so nervous I forgot.

So I get to it and start heading down after downshifting into 7th. The road was perfectly clear and I ended up feeling like an ### for going so slow. I wasn't yet confident enough in my shifting to upshift on a steep grade like that.

By now I've been on all the interstate passes and I agree with whoever said they are no big deal. I'd rather be on them then some of those tight winding two lane mounatin roads.

Emigrant Hill Pass on old US 30. Since replaced by Cabbage on I-84.
But the interstate didn't exist then.
I was pulling doubles up all 9 switchbacks.
then two days later on the return, I pulled them down the hill.
Other great passes? Lewiston Grade and White Bird.
All switchbacks. All have been replaced.

Been over everything with an I in front of it, no white knuckles except for one trip. I just came around the final bend on the 70 eastbound into Denver at 7pm on a sunday. Four wheelers all around. I was at 79k and leveled off at 60mph in 9th with the jake on. Transmission computer shorted. After the few seconds it took me to figure out what had happened and why I was now hurtling down the hill AT IDLE, the speedo was pegged. It was precipitating and fairly chilly. I knew trying to stop would likely produce an accident, so I got left and murmured a prayer. Judicious stabs at the brake, flashes of the high beams and a lot of air horn cleared enough of a path. I'll never drive an automatic again.

My first was some road in West VA. I was driving my dads truck hauling a Dozer. I was scared to death and I believe it was the only time I have ever seen my dad wear a seatbelt.

My first solo was a trip from Chicago to Salt Lake, to Albuquerque (missed a turn and wound up in AZ then back to NM) back to Salt Lake up to Idaho to MT out to Minot AFB in ND. Taking Hwy 191 south the first time took me all day and then some. By the time I got back home to WI after that trip, mountains have never bothered me.
