i think i'm going to try venturing I-80 west; i've never gone past salt lake and it was only once.
Tell me anything and everything i need to know. For example the mountains---if any? i heard there are some big ones out there?
i should not have more than 20K in the trailer, so maybe 50-60K gross.
Need some I-80 west help....:

when you have to make a left turn youve gone to far
Wargames Thanks this. -
Take chains. Stock up on food and water at Wally-World in case you have to park in the sticks when your hours are up. Enjoy the trip.
Bill104, Wargames and Red Hot Mess Thank this. -
dont do this and you'll be ok, note this is I-80

Donner aint that steep, but it goes on for freaking ever. Especially when its crappy out. It can get over on ya real fast.
Gets a little lonesome between Battle Mountain and Sparks. Other than that, have fun. Its one of my favorite rides. Dont forget to stop and spell your name with rocks in the salt lol.Bill104 Thanks this. -
Its not so much steep as it is if its snowing...dont try to get by without chains..and like the video it may look easy but some of the curves can catch ya if your running too fast...Be safe and enjoy the west run..
Wargames Thanks this. -
That video scares the hell out of me. So there are mountains out that way? How do they compare to I-68?
Even though i'll be light i really don't have any mountain experience----i did smoke em one time to the point where i had to pull over and someone called the fire department on me. This was on I-79 near I-68.
i don't know what the speed limit is out there, but if it is 70, then would it be advisable to leave the flashers on while going down hill and then maybe try to keep at 55, let it coast to 70, then bring it down to 55, let it coast to 70 etc. etc. etc.?Red Hot Mess Thanks this. -
Kansas is exactly right...Donner isn't that steep except for the last 1,000 feet going up and the first 1,000 feet coming down (true for either direction)....the rest of it is just a long grade that will smoke the brakes if you ride them all the way down.
Donner in winter...things can get real bad real fast up that high (that area is one of the worst in the country for sudden, severe weather...even though its not really all that high)
EDITED TO ADD: When I say "1,000 feet"...I'm talking elevation, not distance....those 2,000 feet make up about 4-5 miles of road. -
You better read some road signs before trying to go down at 55. You will DIE!
25 aint too slow in places.Red Hot Mess Thanks this. -
Do not attempt going down Donner at 70 mph....I generally do it in 9th gear (10 speed), jakes on high....never getting over 60 mph for very long, but maybe up to 65 on a longer stretch where I have more time to slow down. It depends on what I'm hauling really...I pull an RGN so some things are more top heavy than others...50-55 mph is about as fast as any sane person needs to be moving on Donner.
But thats me...been over that hill hundreds of times in all kinds of weather...The first time I went down it I probably didn't get over 45 mph all the way.
