I have flown Southwest dozens of times....They're profitable because they're the "Swift Transportation" of the airline industry....:biggrin_25523:

I could believe it. The government picks up the tab for so much of their industry. They were receiving bailouts before receiving bailouts was cool. We pay for the TSA. Why can't the industry provide their own security? If airfare got too expensive, then people would stop flying. Lots of the business travel is outdated with Skype and that sort of thing. I think we should stop propping up this industry. It would find a way to survive, I'm sure.

In my personal opinion using tax money for any reason other than national defense, law enforcement, and services of the like is fraud. If the government would get rid of all the comlex and unneccesary tax deductions and tax exemptions. We would be better off of course that would mean getting rid of alot of the wasted money on social services like welfare and wasted money spent subsidizing industries that cannot survive on thier own. The government needs to handle defense, and law enforcement and stay the hell out of the rest of our lifes. Anyone that has ever looked at a city budget or researched how our tax dollars are spent will wonder what is going on. 50billion per year for the drug war that doesnt work? billions of dollars to recycling companies that are actually harming the enviroment? billions of uncollected tax dollars because this group calls themselfs a church and thinks thier god is above taxes? Ah but I diverse, now i can sit back and await all the hate messages for making a statement about taxing churches :)

I don't mind paying taxes for things I or my family uses....Roads...Schools....Libraries....

But paying taxes to support artists whose only work is graffiti or a "cross in pig urine"....Ah no.....But Wacky Nancy Pelosi thinks those so called "artists" out there carry more value than the average working person in America....Go figure....:biggrin_25526:

Exactly paying for roads schools libraries and even some of the other things that provide an actual good to our community is one thing but giving out millions of dollars to promote abstinence only sexual education? I think I can find a better use for my tax dollars especially considering that a fair amount of the programs the government does subsidize are proven to fail more often than not.

Southwest is profitable because they only fly one type of aircraft (737). This keeps their crew training to a minimum. And since they don't fly international with large aircraft they don't have to keep cross training pilots as the schedules change from summer to winter flying. This is a huge savings.
When they go into a new market they flood that market with 6-8 flights a day to try and capture the market share, even though their fares are not always the lowest in the market, but are perceived to be.
Oh, and bags fly free. You gotta love their commercials.

there are still a handful of those owner operators left. they must not be that bad, as they still run trucks for a couple of companies. Riverside Service Corp out of Buffalo has a couple, I think Jones Motor, Kaplan, and CRST Malone still have a few around the rust belt as well.

Might be worth someones time to find out what they are still getting as far as supplemental charges.
