Gotta love that "interest free loan to the government" argument.

Have you checked out what the government pays on a 1 year treasury note? I believe it's probably less then 1%. So, even if Joker gave the government his $3,700 all at once, he'd get a whopping $37 from the Feds in interest at the end of the year ;-)

This "mandatory" per diem sucks. Just added up sweetie's miles for last year for tax prep, and because the company is deducting .02-cents/pm to track it (the ol' 2-cent scam), he lost almost $1,500 in wages. Those 2-cents start to add up when you rack up the miles.

    So disappointed. :biggrin_2552:

im glad may gives the option
when i first signed up, I opted in for the per diem. tho, I wasn't getting paid for miles when I was with the trainer so I don't think it even mattered... when I went in for my solo test, I asked for the form again and opted out of it.

It can be a benefit, but IMO its in a certain situation. First, the driver must take the standard deduction due to his financial situation. Second, no cpm kickback to the carrier to "cover expenses." Then it works out in the tax payer's favor as far as what's owed to the government. There are other liabilities thoogh.
