Ok so I have been a driver for 16 years and I have done most of everything there is to do. Alot of flat bed and alot of weird loads, alot of oversize. I have low boy with heavy equiptment and all the other sillyness You can think of. My tractors have always been mack day's but specd heavy and with long WB's I have alot of miles in old super liners and every other model mack there is or has beenYeah even B61's. I don't want to pull my own chain but I am a good driver, I have a clean record and really have never hit anything, the only accident I have ever had was when someone drove underneith my reefer one night he was drunk and the accident never made my record. Thats it. I live in Mass. and drive in Boston and all the other hellish places we have to offer. I am always in a tight backing situation.
So here is my Fear, I am going to interview for a job which I really want it is over the road and I will have to road test in a truck with a sleeper guess what guy's and girls, You got it! in 16 years I have never driven a truck with a sleeper. Now I know if I was left alone and sent on my way I would get accoustomed in a matter of hours driving it and would probably have to get out and walk behind to take a look when backing till I totally got the hang of it. What I can guarantee is I won't hit anything I know how not to do that, and I may look like a rookie for a while but who cares. So is there anything I should know when I go too road test, should I tell them. or try to pull it off, am I going to climb in and be fine or is it going to shock the hell out of me. I have driven them bob around the yard or to the shop.. I know I will get use to it but I have to pass I really think the job will be good for me and I want otr experience at some point in my carrer. Any advice or suggestions I would greatly appreciate, I am actually embarresed all theese years and always had a window in the back.
Need advice may be in over my head?????

Doma, you will be fine. You have driven long WB so that wont be a problem. You are surely able to use your mirrors to go backwards!
Visualize the job, visualize getting the job... and take it calm in the road test! You will be fine! Gimme a break, 16 years driving.... you're gonna ace the test! :smt036 -
You'll be fine.
You're not going to be timed. Remember when you only have mirrors to use.
You can't go too slow. Slow is fast, and Fast is reckless

Well, You guy's were right had my test on tue and all went well. Albeit with a different company than orignally thought, I got an offer with a good size flat bed carrier here in the northeast, they are out of jersey and the pay packagw was phenominal! They applied to one of thoes multi compnny apps that You fill out on line, and had me at their C.T. terminal right away, I have known them all my life and we even did some oversize work for them in the past, but I never thought of applying with them cause I thought they only hired insiders,... So I talked with the super for about 2 hours and we exchanged stories, and then he had me go with a driver that has been with them for 20 something years, and yep I drove it like I had been it all year, we even got lost and had to swing around in a parking lot tight too, no problem, granted it was not a condo but I got it, and know now I can do any of them I need too, dosent matter, They hired me on wednesday had my piss cup and physical yeaterday and report for duty on monday in Jersey. I am pumped, Yeah it is flatbed work but thats all I have done for all my life, They have an awsome reputation and most of their drivers have been there over 10 years, they have a true 32% T.A. Their pay is the best I have seen yet and the holidays are silly, they give like 10 paid a year and your friggin birthday, Things will work out good here, I love to run and actually enjoy strapping and tarping, especially the weird ones, ask me some day and I will have your attention with some of the stuff I have had on a deck before.. So anyway thanks so much for the encouragement guy's.. I did ya proud, and will soon be pulling the good paycheck..
Thanks -
Way to go! This is encouraging to read because I'll be going from a day to a sleeper in a few months from now. It totally feels different driving the thing, have yet to pull a trailer with it lol.

Way to go, Doma! From your post and the responses from others here, I was sure you were going to be fine... and to get a job even better than anticipated? That's just awesome!
I know I'd be interested in hearing about some of the loads you've hauled. While securing your own load is extra work (and sometimes nasty work in bad weather), I would imagine that it would keep you mentally sharp -- you can't secure freight without knowing something about it... and that alone would keep you learning. I can just imagine the knowledge that a flatbedder picks up over the years. It must be tremendous.
Keep that DAC clean, and please keep us posted on your new job.
