Sorry I forgot all about your age when I posted that. Actually I don't even think I knew their minimum age was 23. Just stay away from CR England and Crst though. Those are the worst ones you could start with.

You can get your CDL learner's permit without going to a driving school. You can even get your CDL without going to a driving school, but you have to take the DOT road test in a big rig. If you can find someone who owns a truck that you can test with at the DOT, you can get your CDL without going to school.

    I did.

A lot of companies won't hire you unless you go to school. You can get as little as 2 months OTR with an owner operator, and Melton will hire you (not sure about the min age, but you can check their website). You can place ads to get an owner op to let you run with them for a couple months, then you meet the 2 months recent verifiable OTR experience that Melton requires.

Don't take this the wrong way, but since you're female, if you are sexy you'll get responses from owner ops if you also place a pic because trucking can be a L O N E L Y job, and they'd be more than happy to take a hottie out to train them so long as you have your learner's permit. Who knows, you many even meet your destined soul mate. Stranger things have happened.

Don't give up though. Just keep envisioning yourself in your mind's eye as running down the road trying to loosen your load.

Learning from driving with an O/O sounds interesting... I think it would probably more productive to learn from on the road experience, but I'm not sure if getting a CDL without going to school would affect my hiring prospects elsewhere, especially if regulations change in the future. I'd also be kinda hesitant to go OTR with someone I didn't know fairly well.

I've got my learner's permit already, but I will most likely need to get the interstate restriction taken off (because I didn't have a DOT physical before I got it, and didn't know I needed one at the time. also, if I had known the test would be so easy I would have just waited until school to take it.)

I'd rather stay far, far away from Werner, CRST, and CR England if possible, (especially after reading some of the stories on here about werner's trainers:biggrin_2552:) but given that they seem to hire just about anyone they look like they might be a good place to get the prehires I'll need for WIA and/or school.

I also found out there's a Sage school nearby in Idaho, and from the small amount of research I've done they seem to be one of the better schools. It also looks like Sage takes loans to pay for tuition (the other school I was looking at doesn't)

I'd rather go with a loan than a company contract to pay for school (since WIA won't pay for all if it), mostly because I'd like to be able to pay off the cost of schooling as soon as possible. (I've never been in debt and don't like the idea of having to be.)

DONT DONT DONT do this on your own Trucking Companies want trained employees from an accredited school. All the companies send you out with a trainer after u get your CDL Cdl schools are a joke they only teach you how to pass your states licences but they are a neccesary evil. FFE in Fort Worth Texas will get u into a truck also this whole thing will take 9 montha to a year b4 u can sign on with anyone and have more control over your destiny but a few years from now it will seem the time went quickly

    Agreed...a school is a must

Schools are what you take out of the more than aything..a company school can get you going as long as yo pay attention and scream for practice..

a good tech school will always be better of course..usually smaller classes, and a lot longer driving time after the book work is done

However..some things to consider..wages for beginning drivers aren't a whole lot..you are in a situation where financially you don't have many obligations..so you would probably be ok there.

You main tingis your company rainer you get one you choose your company and please..please..please don't go to CR England.

Just keep in mind..if things aren't going well with your trainer GET OFF THE TRUCK..it doesn't matter what the reason is...call the copany..get a new trainer..its your career..do what you have to do to ensure its success

    Good luck
