Not really, you just gotta see it from their perspective. They (and we) don't really know you. Alls they got is the paperwork and the knowledge that the USA is Lawsuit Central.
But somebody out there will give you a shot, it's just gonna be harder to find. Stay cool and build up that work history behind the wheel and you're golden. Sure gonna help to have family members who can help you even out the rough spots.
Don't forget us when you make it, c'mon back and inspire others.
HarlemPlayer Thanks this. -
Personally, I thought prison has been the easiest part. I was in a level 5 state prison, where 80% of the population had life w/out, or 20 plus years. Once I adapted, it was easy. The hardest part has been learning how to live as a tax paying member of society, and getting past the stigma of a felon. Before being released I had never payed bills through a legal job. On top of that, I had to find ways to get away from being labeled a felon. In prison, everything was provided. In real life, nothing is free. I can honestly say that prison saved my life. It gave me what I needed in order to live a healthy, and stable life.
Look, I think a lot of convicted felons come to this site, and almost become convinced that a job in trucking is impossible. I never posted here before getting hired, but spent countless hours reading every thread I could to help gain some insight into what was ahead. I also wanted to see if I was about to waste months of time, and thousands of dollars getting my CDL. At one point, this site almost had me convinced that it just wasn't possible. No one here can say for sure whether or not you'll get a job. I can tell you, if I can get a job in trucking, then almost anyone should be able to.
I got hired on with a mid-sized OTR company, when everyone from my CDL school told me I wouldn't. In fact, the job lady at the school, wouldn't even fax in my resumes to OTR companies. She said it would be a waste of time. She said if I were lucky that I could get a class B job. Fast forward 7 months, and I'm sitting at the Petro in a new Prostar, waiting to get loaded tomorrow.
It's up to you to get the company to look past your label of a felon. Get them to look at what you've done since your trouble, and who you are now, not then. Also, I say this a lot, but look for companies that self-insure their fleet. You also want to make sure that when you take a job that they can verify your work history when it's time to move on to a bigger/better company. I turned down a job making 12 cpm more, because I knew that when the time came, my work history would be hard to prove. Once you get your foot in the door, all that is important is experience.
I was told, "no", over 100 times before I finally got hired. I'm surprised I don't have nightmares about filling out applications. If things keep going like they are now, it won't be long before I start filling out applications again. I'm not that far away from a year of experience, and better money.Last edited: Feb 25, 2012
j_mac84trucker, 123456, slim shady and 1 other person Thank this. -
in some cases some employers will look at how long it has been and what you have done since it happened. if you show genuine remorse some places will give you a shot. how does that work on cross border freight? all felonies or just violent?
-
A felon will have an extremely hard time getting into Canada. Even with an underage possession of alcohol will prevent you from going into canada.
-
you can apply for a ministers pass to enter canada
-
Apply is not GET.... and I think you should ask yourself "Why would the Canadian Govt Minister intervene for an American felon?"
9/11 changed alot of things, including the border. -
At least someone gets it. -
Having a felony myself I think its the type of felony you have..
and when they ask about it and you tell them that what they are seeing is "he got mad and tried to burn someone up..if he gets mad at us..will he set fire to our equipment?"
Its going to make a company a little leery in this industry..I hate to say it but it is what it is.
Mine was a driving o suspended in '94 and yeah..time makes a huge difference.
You could probably find something local for you to get it a bit further into you past and put more distance between you and it.
I've got 18 years with nothing worse than speeding tickets..that speaks a lot louder than the few months where a lot of bad things were happening in my life.
