Depends on what you may have to spend for her to get the CDL. But The way I would look at it is if she gets it at least she has it if she drives or not. In a pinch at least she could drive a couple of hours on a long straight portion of road or something if you have a tight schedule. Though if you go the company driver route and do teams that is a different story as of course they expect the driving to be split up, to get the freight there in the shorter amount of time.

Indeed! It would have to be free, or fronted by the company with a reimbursement plan. Or, something I'll also be checking into later today: a Pell Grant to take the CDL training at our local community college. Neither of us can afford to pay for it out of our own pockets at this time, unfortunately.

We would almost certainly start out as company team drivers if both of us had CDLs. We would probably split the driving, inasmuch as possible and legal, so she would have the easier legs until she had built up her experience and/or confidence.

Again, I appreciate the input. I've been getting good replies that have caused me to stop and think things through. That's exactly why I'm here.

Many of your concerns can/will be handled easily. It's just a matter of proper planning for the trip.

A side note for you. Husband and wives as a team are treated like gold with many of the companies I have dealt with or worked for. They are allowed much more leeway than a solo driver.

I know many couples that cover about 5000 miles a week, and call it a really hard week. While others run the truck as a solo...IE they don't drive at night. While another, doesn't drive on sunday for religous reasons.

As a husband wife team, you'll get more out of any company you go to work for, than you would as a solo. Just be careful which company you decide to go with, choose carefully.

Your plan sounds very similar to ours. We are baby boomer aged (at least I am, wife is 10yrs slower,,errr,,younger,,lol) and I am quitting my job and career the end of this month after over 11yrs with them. We are actually in school right now, trying to finish up before I quit. Then we will team drive together.
As far as house, we rented it to our son for the first year, then we'll sell it. We have a RV we live in now and when on vacation or anything once we start driving.
Along with your thoughts, we will be able to pay off our bills fairly quickly without a house payment as teams make pretty good $$ (in the $100k range) Then start banking all we can for retirement.
We have family scattered from Wisc, to KCMo, to Yuma, Az, so we plan on taking home time at different locations to see family (and once in awhile some for ourselves,,,ie Florida or San Diego, etc during wintertime. We plan on being on the road for 6 weeks or so before we request hometime.
Its a little tough working full time and going to school full time right now, but the school is great and working with our schedule as much as possible.
Let us know what you come up with,
    BOL
    Cheers
    Roadie
