So far I have applied to Key Energy Services (George West), Thomas Petroleum & Maxum (San Antonio), and applied last night to Sunoco for transporting oil (Bay City) as they will take CDL graduates. Thinking about flying down to the San Antonio area in two weeks and hitting up some places in person, but then I see their is an Oil Jobs Fair the first week of April so not sure if I should wait.

Thanks again for your feedback. This thread is a world of knowledge with people like you offering up info. Hope to be able to provide the same service to some unemployed soul out there soon!

Do any of these companies hire new drivers? I'm trying to avoid the OTR companies that offer "free" training. I've tested and recieved my Class A CDL w/double-tripple-tanker, and waiting for the background check for the HazMat. I rented a rig to take the driving test, but have experience with straight truck, but almost 20yrs. ago. I've been working in manufacturing for one company for 16yrs. Got laid off, and want to get into hauling for the gas & oil industry. How can a new guy get a start??

What company are you with, if you don't mind me asking? I'm not sure what companies to look at to get into the crude hauling side of things. I have heard they earn more money, however.

they use to advertise about $85,000 per year and some have said they are a good company to work for. I would do a search here and see what comes up. I guess you could always apply and see what happens.

    Good job, CPLMAC!

This next line is not aimed at you, as you are 38 years old and have seen the good times and bad. This is aimed at the younger guys:

PUT SOME MONEY ASIDE FOR THE SLOWDOWN. The oil patch is notorious for sudden slowdowns and they happen overnight and without warning. Ask any hand with a little gray hair and they will tell you the same thing.

And... what if I'm wrong? What if there's never a slowdown? Do you think you will look at your savings account later and say, "I wish I hadn't saved so much. I hate having money in my savings account?"

Do yourself a favor-- save some of your money during this boom!

Okay I'm ready to update with all the info for you folks still wondering and possibly watching the forums..

Okay in Pampa Texas Halliburton has no competition up here; so your pay won't be as high as other regions.. In 6 months you can transfer also.

The good news is that there is lots of opportunity for you out here.. The hours are as many as you like; promotions wide open... People are moving to the bigger bucks...

The hot hiring spots here are fracking workers... 108hrs +

If your cementing like myself its 72+ on a slow week and as high as 110 the busiest thus far. Cementing requires a little more grasp on Mathematics for density and mixtures in cubic feet.

If you happen to report too the shop and there isn't any work for you at the moment they send you home on call and you will receive a days wages... All in all everything is working out :)
