I have a question about tractor wheelbase for flat bed work, I am looking at a tractor with a 224" wheelbase and I am wondering if I mount a headache rack will it be too close to the trailer? Sorry if this is a dumb question but this is my first truck purchase and I don't want to screw it up! I believe the only dumb questions are the ones you don't ask.
Thanks in advance for your help

You haven't given us the right info. The wheelbase sounds a bit short for a big sleeper truck, but there are many variables. What the kingpin setting is on the flatbed will be the biggest one. How much clearance do you have from the back of cab(or exhaust) to where the kingpin will be in the fifth wheel.

Do you even need a headache rack? They are handy to store stuff and required in Canada and some leases require it as well. Another option is to put a headboard on the trailer instead of a headache rack.

Headboard on the trailer is a pain. No fun crawling over it all the time to get on the trailer and no fun tarping with it on.

The company I am leasing to requires a headache rack ,as for the dimensions I will have to check that out I have driven a lot of trucks over the years and never really gave much thought to these specs. Thanks

Worst case "should" be a 30" kingpin, so you'll want at least 24" from the front of the trailer to the headache rack, so that's 54" from the center of your fifth wheel to your rack. I personally would be looking for a 244"ish wheelbase

What's the distance from the center of your tandems to the back of your sleeper?
(assuming your fifth wheel can be centered there)

Vertical mufflers behind the sleeper waste a whole lot of useable space if you mount a cab shield. A custom narrow rack to sit next to a single exhaust is an option.

How about "what kind of truck" and "where is the exhaust"... along with eveyone else's questions. Sleeper size is gonna be a HUGE factor

If it has side of the cab mounted pipes, that will free up about a foot of room on the back. If the pipe is on the rear of the sleeper, your gonna loose about a foot.

Go with a 300" wheelbase than you will have no worries!:biggrin_25525:

_I have 9 feet from the back of my sleeper to the front of my trailer.:biggrin_255:

    SHC and MM71 Thank this.
