I don't know about the others that may have misread it but when you said newbies this is why you never stop on the side of the road soumed like you think a newbie was at fault.Sorry for misunderstanding you. What happened here, there is no advice for a new driver. It was an unfortunant accident done by another motorist.

I know it,he would have been toast like his trl.Actually things like that do happen.Either the driver on the hwy is driving too close to the shoulder or maybe the one pulled over is too close to the hwy.I've seen cops pulled over and his tires are out in the road. Its like thats an accident waiting to happen.

That's good, many companies do forbid stopping on the shoulder if its not an emergency and you also can get fired for it.In some states its against the law unless an absolute emercency. When you have something wrong and pull over we are required by law to put our .3 triangles out within 10 minutes.Wonder if this driver did that.Cars should also have to do that.

SHC I got the meaning of what you were saying. A newbie will just look for the first convinient place to stop if they want to , a more experienced driver will continue to the next available SAFE place to pull far off the road or off the highway entirely. A good tip for a newbie that needs to pull off, if you see a frontage road running along side the highway take the next approach to it and stop on the shoulder of the frontage road if thats all thats available. Its better than stopping on the interstate shoulder. Dont worry too much about getting stuck as majority of frontage roads will have an approach to the main highway every couple of miles so you will be able to get back on the highway at some point.

You're not going to find awhole lot of frontage roads when u need them or even an exit close enough to pull into..Many times you don't have a choice but to pull off the side if you all off a sudden have a blowout,no brks or whateven and then nearest safe place is 5 miles away, you can't make it that far.All states have that sign that says emergengy stopping only right on the interstate which means just that. But make sure to put your triangles out.

I agree, dont stop on the shoulder unless you absolutely have to...But if you really have to, if you can, limp to an exit ramp and park on the exit ramps shoulder. It separates you from traffic a little more.

And as you are driving, PAY ATTENTION. If you see any vehicle on the side of the road, GET OVER. Theres no reason you should only leave 2-3 feet between your truck and the disabled vehicle. This is how drivers and mechanics get killed.

And be aware of other drivers, particularly the ones in front of you. If you see somebody in the right lane hit their brakes and turn their left signal on pretty fast, be aware that there is probably a disabled vehicle or something else on the right shoulder/lane and you need to start getting ready to get over!! And if you see somebody wanting to come over into your lane very quickly, there may be a good reason why...Just swallow your pride, let off the pedal, and let them over.

I get so tired of being broke down, and having cars fly by me leaving hardly any buffer zone (or seeing this happen to other disabled vehicles)...Its particularly frustrating when there isnt even anybody next to them, they are just too lazy or stupid to get over one lane.

You never see it when you need it and you allways see it when you dont ! I had a fuel return line rupture in montana one day heading down through west yellowstone. No option but to stop it right then and there! And believe me there wasnt much of a shoulder in that spot! Do what ya gotta do but use your head and be safe! I would rather have stopped right where i was than risk an engine fire by driving further down the road with fuel spewing out of the return line and spraying onto the engine.

I got nine years backing up rookie :biggrin_2559: just kidding driver..

Point should be pay attention when driving and stay in your lane. If the driver was stopped just to stop he should have picked a better spot. Breakdowns don't always allow you to choose.
