I had a n interesting conversation with a gal that manages the recruiting office of a major trucking outfit. Not saying who it is, but there is a big screw on the side of them.
It was a chance meeting at a karaoke bar here in PC beach, and she was a couple of adult beverages ahead of me. So I took advantage of the situation. She told me the biggest problem is not CSA, it is just the fact that 70% of the n00bs cant take the physiological separation from home and family. That is the major turnover, and the reason why initial pay is so low. CSA is making an impact and will probably in another year to 18 months will cause an actual driver shortage.
She went on to explain why the trucks are so stripped, and it is not just for weight. The average level of education for drivers entering the job to day are below 10th grade. They tend to not comprehend the physics of the vehicle, hence the pictures of trailers on rocks, curbs, cars, and whatever else these people can hit. She actually said that eventually the industry will require a HS diploma or GED before they will even talk to you. Her boss thinks that max weights will be increased and possibly 60' trailers will be allowed in the next few years.
Think its bad now?
It will get worse.
She kinda got into why the hiring zones seem totally random. It not all about freight lanes, but it is also the fact that statistically better drivers live in the major hiring zones.
After this she went up to sing "All Jacked Up" and within an hour she was!
Just though i'd share this with yall.
