They do a surgery for sleep apnea that involve shrinking the excess tissue on the roof of the mouth with a heat probe the surgery is called a UVPP it is pretty quick it only takes about 1/2 hour or so as with all surgery there are risks. It is not that you forget to breath it is that excess tissue obstructs the airway that is why it is more common in overweight people. If you think you have sleep apnea you should consult with your doctor as there are dangers.Later

Another thing to consider is tonsils. My wife had hers removed about 4-5 days after our wedding last summer. She used to snore alot but that is like seriously 99% gone. She even sleeps better too. The tonsil doc talked to us and shot the breeze for a while with us. After talking, he felt she had it, and was willing to bet his practice that I had it. Im a hefty guy, over 330lbs. Its to the point now that...I don't even know what a good nights sleep is anymore, lol.
She had a sleep study done, no sleep apnea. She says I should go in for a test because she says my breathing is messed up when I sleep....lots of short quick breaths, then I will stop breathing for a few seconds....etc. Doesn't happen to me at all when Im awake. -
#### straight it's the truckers' fault! I know where to place the blame now. If I have learned one thing here, it is that the trucker is always to blame.

(I'm laughing 'cause I'm kidding, but it's really sad that there's only one side to a story when a trucker is involved in an incident...) -
Another sleep apnea person here. Ive known for years I had it. A few months back my doctor wouldn't pass my DOT physical until I took a sleep study. Im glad he did now. Luckily insurance has covered it all. Im on whats called a BIPAP machine instead of CPAP. The reason being is it was determined that I would benefit from a different inhalation pressure than exhale pressure where as a CPAP is constant. I didn't realize just how much GOOD sleep I was missing.

I have a follow up sleep study scheduled for Sep 25th no big deal but the next day they are doing a day time nap study, Every 2 hours they will put me in a chair in a pitch black room for 40 minutes to see if I fall asleep, this will go on every two hours all day for 4 times, the entire time hooked up to electrodes. Seems like this will be torture to me, how boring is this going to be, I can't leave the place from 9:30pm on the 25th until 4PM on the 26th. I have sleep apnea and had a regular sleep study 2 years ago but never this nap test.

It will grow back in less than a month or a few: a complete waste of time unless you quit eating processed foods with milk byproducts and corn syrup, which is in most all foods for last 40 years at least.
And your doctor is the danger, so don't talk to him about your health.
Are you waking up in middle of night? What do you need a 'sleep study' to tell you then? Sheesh. Doctors were the first ones to push cigarettes in advertisements around 1940. -
Keep that "doctor is the danger" thought in mind if you get some chest pains or start bleeding from places you shouldn't. That will really be modern day Darwin at work.
Sleep apnea is also different than just "waking up at night". The majority, if not all episodes of apnea one might experience occur without the persons knowledge. Thats why you do the sleep study. -
Grow back? Who told you that? I've spoken to at least 6 actual doctors of medicine about this operation since 1991 and exactly ZERO has so much as hinted such a thing. They've all, except the last, who told me the surgery is nearly 100% effective today, told me it doesn't always work.
Doctors study these things. Obviously, you never have. Anyone here willing to take your advice over their doctors advice... Deserves what they get.
Sleep Apnea patients may never wake up in the middle of the night without outside interference. They typically stop breathing in the middle of the night, because they're choking. If they always woke up, none would die from this disorder. Fact is, people do die from it. Most people show the symptom of being sleepy during the day when they should be wide awake, and even fall asleep for no apparent reason. This is where and why the sleep study comes in.
They get a sleep study because they generally have no idea what is happening while they sleep. Key word, sleep.
I, for one, will stick with my doctors and their advice. Sorry for sounding brash or angry, but I can't just sit around knowing that someone whom I believe to have no real knowledge is adding such negative comments to a medical matter. -
I agree i have SA and i lost 35 pounds to try to alieviate it but nope still got it although losing 35 lbs helps btw I was only a little overweight not a jabba the hutt type I dont smoke or drink so a little weight loss wouldnt have hurt either way
