I was just browsing and wanted to stop in and say hi to everyone. I read the posts and sorry to say but there are NO states that have any laws regarding safety for trucks that are pulled over to the side of the road. Whether the truck is stopped for two minutes or two hours, 4 wheelers are allowed to speed right on by coming as close to you as the lane provides.
Only Law enforcement vehicles and vehicles that are engaged in the safety of the roadway, for example, (safety vehicle with strobes, wrecker service vehicles that are actively working on a roadway (Construction Zone) vehicles are the ones that are included in the laws regarding pulling over to a safe lane and slowing down. Additionally, some states do not even include some of the ones I mentioned. They just include law enforcement and emergency (fire-EMS) vehicles. Yes, they even exclude emergency towing type vehicles.
I personally tried the approach mentioned in the previous posts. I outfitted my entire truck with strobe lighting all the way around. When I hit the switch, I lit up the street like a Christmas tree. And yet the cars just kept speeding by. I even used them when I was forced to operate in a high traffic limited vision area, and they still did it.
Bottom line. There is NO SAFE solution for this except to take all the necessary precautions to ensure that you dont get hit. Dozens (literally dozens) of police officers get killed each year from getting hit by passenger vehicles. Treat each incident for what it is worth. Dont take any chances, always be on guard and remember it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to be smarter that the average jerk and get home to YOUR family every night.
Be safe out there...........
Are there speed limit laws for passing chain-up areas?

Jfaulk99 and Ezrider_48501 Thank this. -
Agreed, we need a new law saying you must drive 5mph past any vehicle on the side of the road in case they feel the need to walk out in front of you. We should get a law passed to replace personal responsibility!

REGARDING-
I am the OP
The speed limit should be the same or less as in a school zone which I believe is 20 miles per hour in most places. That speed will not add that much time to their trip since it will usually only be a short distance that they have to go the lower speed while driving by truckers chaining up.
The 4 wheelers driving by the trucks chaining up were going up to 60 plus in my estimation and that 40 miles per hour difference could make a difference between them losing total control of their vehicle or not in snow and ice.
This could make a difference between dead or alive if they hit a trucker or his tractor trailer while he or she is chaining up.Last edited: Mar 12, 2012
