Hey how healthy you gotta be for you DOT Physical?

    I am 6ft and 350lbs. (I know I am working on it)
I also have sleep apnea. I use a breathing machine at night.

Can this be a big factor in passing a DOT physical?

Other than that I have no other health conditions. Plus, how do you guys stay in shape on the road? Can you lose weight on the road? How do you get workouts?

This might sound stupid but are there workout rooms in any truckstops?

Should I give up now? Or is this something that I can still be alright with?

Currently I've only seen two truck stops with any exercise equipment of any kind.

In the same boat here wannabenks. I am 6ft 350 and on a CPAP myself. Blood pressure is a factor you definitely need to check out, not just for driving a truck, but for your overall health concern. Mine teeters on the 140/90 magic number the DOT doesn't like, without medication. Go see your PCP and have them put you on meds that will lower it if it runs that high or higher. I also developed Rheumatoid Arthritis earlier this year, but am being treated aggresively for it with the latest drugs. Any drivers out there that have RA and were able to get their CDL's? I have no joint damage and my pain level is now next to nothing. I still function like before I got it by being on the meds.

Luckily I don't have high blood pressure. I am fairly young 28, but it starting to creep up, so I am trying to bring it down with diet and excercise because I don't wanna go on meds if I can help it.

I use my machine EVERY night. If I am without it, it's a long night and an even longer next day, feels like I have a hangover if I don't use it. Love my machine now. :) We were enemies at first though!

I'm really concerned with trying to get some of this weight off, I know sitting for long periods won't help, wanna do everything I can so I don't gain while on the road.

    thanks for all the advice.

I even thought about that gastric bypass. Any idea how they feel about that?

Right now that is not an option, and if it was it would be a last option, I want to do it on my own, but I have thought about it health wise.

    Is Sleep Apnea disqualifying? 146
Drivers should be disqualified until the diagnosis of sleep apnea has been ruled out or has been treated successfully. As a condition of continuing qualification, it is recommended that a CMV driver agree to continue uninterrupted therapy such as CPAP, etc. / monitoring and undergo objective testing as required.
A driver with a diagnosis of (probable) sleep apnea or a driver who has Excessive Daytime Somnolence(EDS) should be temporarily disqualified until the condition is either ruled out by objective testing or successfully treated.
Narcolepsy and sleep apnea account for about 70% of EDS. EDS lasting from a few days to a few weeks should not limit a driver’s ability in the long run. However, persistent or chronic sleep disorders causing EDS can be a significant risk to the driver and the public. The examiner should consider general certification criteria at the initial and follow-up examinations:
    Severity and frequency of EDS
Presence or absence of warning of attacks
    Possibility of sleep during driving
Degree of symptomatic relief with treatment
    Compliance with treatment.

This is a great question! The Dot Physical Report will screw up your career from the start. Remember anything you tell that Doctor, he is going to put in that report. Companies may ask for that report in the hiring process. Having a DOT Physical card does not mean you are ok to drive! Anything like a old perscription or old injury may throw out the "red flag" and they will weed you out of the hiring process this way!

Thanks curtislyn for posting that. I appreciate it. Although it has raised more questions now though. I wonder what that means "successfully treated"? Because sleep apnea is something that is treated each night with a breathing machine, or I guess there is surgery for it now, but not many people get it yet. I am perfectly fine day and night, as long as I use my machine every night, which I do. If I couldn't be safe driving, I wouldn't want to drive either. But, I feel I am perfectly safe. If I didn't have my machine for a night, I will be tired the next day but still functional, a week on the other hand would be really bad though.
