I just finished signing my paperwork for AIT here in Phoenix. I start on Monday morning. I am excited to start. I dropped out of college so I could start driving. I know not the smartest thing I have done, but then again I spent 11 years in the service and got out. I have been fighting with my old school to get me off their roster for the past week so I could start. I already have 2 pre hires out there. One with Roehl and one with May. I am more then likely going to take Roehl as long as my physical comes back without any problems. Which I don't foresee. But had to get a waiver signed by my VA PCM and that was a hassle in itself. Looks like April 6th or so I will start my externship, just gotta pick a company now. Hope to see some of you on the road.

Hey 'Sporty': A can't seem to decide between AIT and Southwest here in Phx. AIT seems to have a better reputation, but all they seem to talk about is Stevens. I already got my permit, will probably go the four-week course at AIT. Already have pre-hires from Swift and Werner(Who doesn't!). Good luck, and be safe.

Thanks Chef. I went to Phoenix Truck and I got a really bad feeling from them. Like all they wanted was my money. AIT on the other hand seemed to be interested in alot more then that. I have sent out all my own apps, minus one stevens app. I have prehires from May and Roehl right now. I have heard negative things about werner so I wont even apply there. They asked me about filling out an app for them and I said "Thanks, but no thanks." Swift I am staying away from as well. I know a few people who drive for them. Not a bad co. just some of their policies I do not care for. I have done alot of my own leg work. I have 2 more apps out. JBS which currently is short on mentors in this area, and one with Prime. I will be calling them once I start the range portion in 2 weeks. I am also doing their 4 week course.

I went to AIT in LV, NV. I know its a different school but same management. Here is a link to my review of AIT and the basics of what the 4 week course is like.
I went with swift. Swift was fair with me as fair as getting paid correctly. And if I wanted to run they did give me the miles. Summery Driving for Swift is what you make of it and the more independent driver you are the better.
I.E As long as you dont have to talk to somebody in the office your day can go buy fairly peaceful and without incident. -
Aflak, I am not saying swift is a bad company at all. I know a few people that drive for them and love it. I just don't like the fact that if you are home longer then 2 days someone else gets your truck untill you come back. If I am assigned a truck I don't want to have to worry about someone else messing it up, or getting issued a different truck when I come back off of hometime. I am not trying to bash Swift or anything at all. Just not my cup of tea if you catch my drift.

SO true. I agree 100%My first run I was out for a month and it took tremendous effort to get 3 days home time and still keep my truck. I was like WTF guys really !!!

Well I have completed my first week at AIT. The 4 week course in the first 2/3 days is intense. We read word for word out of the CDL book. Alot of dry material. But I did pass all my tests at state and got my permit on Friday. We only have 4 students in our class which is nice because we get the attention that we need if need be. Only down side is that they only have 2 times for the range and they only take 3 at a time which is good but means one of us has to change our schedule to the afternoon class. I am getting used to getting up at 3:30 am again and hope I don't have to change that. This next week we are going to start getting into the logistics of everything.

Yea 3:30am is an avg wake up time if you try to run in the day.IMO I try to run in the day, but my wake up times still vary anywhere from 11pm to 8am. Just depends when the loads needs to be delivered.

Hey Sporty: Glad school is going well for you. I'm still struggling w/ the Big Decision.
Does it really matter in the long run if my chosen CDL school is 'accredited', or 'certified', or whatever? Does this really have any bearing on my entry-level job hunting success?
Pretty frustrated w/ myself for still dragging my heels, any advice out there is welcomed!!! Be safe, y'all. -
Hey- Good hearing from you. Talked to Abraham from Swift today,(again) followed by Judy from AIT/Phx. Guess that may indicate where my decision-making process is going.... Still room in this Monday's class at AIT, so away we go. Sure don't like the idea of slip-seating w/ Swift, but I have an open mind and a new career ahead of me.... Thanks for your help.
