I have my TWIC card, a company I went OTR for paid for it. I just called and got it transferred to my home state, since I don't work for that company anymore. I am just wondering, since I plan on staying local for the remainder of my career, do I really even need to bother picking it up? Does or will it even help me? Being a local driver? I live in North Eastern Ohio if that helps any?

    *EDIT*

Also, instead of making another post, I have another question.

When I got my CDL, I made sure I got every endorsement also. Well, for some reason when I went and got my CDL in November of 2010, it was due for renewal on my birthday of 2011, and I didn't realize it until the day of.. So I had no time to retake my HAZMAT test, and lost my endorsement. Question is; Does already having it before make it any easier getting it back? As far as the prints or fee are concerned?

Things change and I would keep that TWIC just for that purpose. You still have to pay full price for the fees associated and redo the fingerprints for hazmat. The only thing that it might make easier is the time it takes to do the background check. I'm like a boyscout, always prepared so I have all endorsements including TWIC and I have a stepdeck. But I go to ports and haul hazmat and every now and then a tank on the step. Things could change tomorrow and I go to work doing something else that I think might last forever, things change fast man and its easier to have than not for when sheet happens.

Roger that. That was exactly my thinking.. When I was an Iron Worker, I got EVERY cert I could, to increase my employability.. figured I would put the same theory towards trucking.

Good thinking! I figure it like tools in my toolbelt. There are so many that cant or not willing to get hazmat and TWIC that it increases demand which in turn increases pay in my instance as an O/O. Same thing with being willing and able to go into Canada.

Yeah, planning on going back to get my HAZMAT ASAP.. Just work so #### much, I hardly have time. I could easily pass the test again, and the prints.. just have to have time. I keep seeing good local jobs I can't even apply for because they require HAZMAT!..

I got a TWIC card when it first came out, and it is set to expire in Dec of 2013. I will not bother to renew. In fact, many driver's message boards/websites, and trucker's magazines, the drivers have voiced their opinions on the uselessness of the TWIC.

If you were going to be hauling any petroleum products, and as a result, had to go to the what i call "tank farms", then yes, you would need a TWIC.

But for the average "Joe Trucker?? I say drop it. If you get a job that REQUIRED IT later on?? You can always re-apply.

NO, it just means you still have to go through the testing, the hazmat finger printing/back ground check, money, money, money, etc, etc.

Every stinking time we renew our hazmat, we have to go through this marlarkey. I want someone in the guberment to tell me, how the heck do my finger prints change over a 5 year period?? (5 year renewals for my state)

TWIC is needed for any facility that is on a waterway that is controlled by the coast guard. anyone who is planning on doing business in a port for example is better off to get their twic. if you are a local driver inland away from waterways, then it may be a waste of money. i was hauling gas for almost 2 years out of port everglades, i don't believe i was ever asked to show it.

hazmat is much more a necessity than is twic usually.

in florida i believe every two years with the hazmat/fingerprints=$100 plus.

Guess you have never been to an inland port, they do exist and they do ask sometimes. Whether or not they ask is besides the point as you are still required to carry it on your person.
